Attention!! The @ku-eeb.bsky.social GSO is hosting a fundraiser this Thursday, May 8th. Please join us for dinner and order off the special menu to support graduate students!! @kubiology.bsky.social @kunewsservice.bsky.social

Also, "de-extinction" is a stupid thing to waste resources on when we have plenty of extant species in need of protecting. Maybe we should be focusing our energy, time, money, etc. on protecting extant species before even considering any "de-extinction." I also don't personally buy the "bringing X

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

🧪 #ScienceSky and #AcademicSky: We’re trying to learn more about the real-life scope and impact of the Trump administration terminating NIH grants. Here's how you can help our reporting 👇

This is cool. The Guardian recreated a searchable climate future risk tool (wildfire, extreme heat, drought, hurricane, and coastal flood) for the US that was developed by FEMA but deleted by the Trump administration’s ‘climate’ purge.

Saw this guy today and feeling good about the possibility of spring

This morning, the US National Science Foundation fired 168 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, for no cause other than they were the agency's most recent hires. 🧪 Co-workers are leaving supportive messages before they have to clear out of the building at 5 p.m. Sent to me by a source ⬇️

hello cis friends this is what people mean by trans genocide if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

I know it's small in the whole scheme of things, but the bloodbath at NPS in Hawaii is almost certainly going to lead directly to the extinctions of no fewer than 4 native Hawaiian songbirds in the next 4-5 years.

If you live in Kansas, you should be speaking out against this bill btw

Have y’all seen the Kansas legislature is hearing a bill that would ban both school districts AND colleges from using someone’s preferred name and pronouns?? Action links coming, contact those legislators now before this gets to the floor for a vote 🚨🚨😳😳😳 #kansas #ks #ksleg #kslegislature

In a sentence never before uttered by humans, I am delighted to share that an alligator stole my conservation instructor’s hat by jauntily walking into the water while wearing it 🐊

If you have an iPhone and don’t want Apple AI monitoring/reading/learning from every single app you use, you need to make these changes (not just for Signal). 🧪

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

in less than eight years the NCAA went from banning North Carolina from hosting championships due to its bathroom bill to... this.

Are you feeling like screaming into a pillow for 1000 years? If you have the means, the Trans Youth Emergency Project is giving direct grants to families of trans kids. southernequality.org/tyep/

Missouri voters enshrined reproductive rights in the state constitution 3 months ago. Yet abortion remains unavailable. The state’s main provider is fighting legal hurdles to resume offering the procedure in the state. /// By Jeremy Kohler // www.propublica.org/article/miss...

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.

NEW: In response to orders by the Trump admin, the CDC has taken down the Household Pulse Survey, one of the biggest and most important sources of Long COVID data in the world. The US government is literally erasing the existence of Long COVID.

I talked to Black medical experts to get their thoughts on a damaging and dangerous vaccine claim that RFK Jr. doubled down on this week: www.huffpost.com/entry/rfk-jr...

The USDA has taken down most website pages that have references to climate change. The Trump administration had ordered USDA workers to identify, archive, or unpublish materials mentioning climate change by "no later than close of business this Friday," according to leaked emails.

CDC’s clinical guidelines for PrEP — which all but eliminates HIV risk — have been removed from CDC’s website. This is what you get when you search. Expanding PrEP access is essential to end HIV infections. They want people to get HIV as some sort of punishment for being immoral.

The CDC has removed data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and health disparities from their website. Pages removed include: - Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System - Social Vulnerability Index - Efforts to Address Racism as a Fundamental Driver of Health Disparities

I'm very sad that "I have a paper on this" continues Funding delays of > 30 days lead to, after 5 years: - 40% increase in scientists exiting US labor force (constrained among those born in the US) - 20% decrease in wages - Burden is born by postdocs, grad students, and staff

Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.

A couple of years ago, institutions rushed to insert token references to Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate etc. on their websites. Our communities see and will remember your capitulation now.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

In response to orders from the Trump White House, the National Science Foundation has canceled all of its grant review panels for this week. This follows the National Institutes of Health canceling its grant review panels earlier. This is a huge disruption to US science.

“An ongoing tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas has become the largest in recorded history in the United States”

If you are affected in any way by the NIH freeze and you want to talk anonymously for @sequencermag.bsky.social, DM me for my Signal #. Scientist, non-scientist, whoever you are.

If you’re negatively impacted by these NIH developments find a congressperson here and let them know 👇spoiler alert you’re all impacted science.house.gov/committee-me... here’s a relevant senate committee too www.commerce.senate.gov/members

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

The Trump admin has cancelled the panels that approve NIH grants, & is also banning scientists from communicating with the public, attending conferences, and hiring. NIH is the largest funder of biomedical research in the world. This will severely halt the development of many lifesaving treatments.

They…turned off…National Institutes of Health grants? That’s nearly $50 billion of scientific research.

OKAY. Here is how to actually turn off Gemini AI for your google workspace! 1) contact google support from admin panel and keep asking for a supervisor/to speak to a person. 2) ask them to enable settings in "Gemini for google workspace" 3) turn it off. I just did this and it worked.

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

Razed to dust, this is what Israel's apocalyptic erasure of Northern Gaza looks like. Palestinians are "returning" to nuclear-scale desolation.

that moment when gender is definitely an unchangable biological truth so you have to enforce it via fascistic law

How about some blue spiders? Here is a Brazilian jewel tarantula (Typhochlaena seladonia). This species is now iconic so if you are not familiar with it... you're welcome. A very small tarantula that lives in a makeshift tent on tree bark in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. #BlueBugs #BlueMonday
