This is gorgeous! No cap! Seriously, low key obsessed.

And with that, thank you, if you made it this far into my TEDtalk. It’s not a terrible life, once you get used to it, but you have to be realistic, especially when you’re like me and you live in a very small city.

I have tons of horror stories and experiences that humbled me real quick and so it can be disheartening when people make crass and careless statements insinuating that my job, “can’t be that hard”.

Oh, and I can’t forget about the constant fear that one Karen with anger issues and controlling tendencies will accuse you of giving them an infection because they don’t like the way you told them you can’t fit 100 names in their daisy all over the internet.

You want to draw for a living and think tattoos are the easiest way? Best start loving the “customer is always right” bullshit, you are essentially a glorified skin xerox machine. For every one cool tattoo you do, you do hundreds of soul killing bad art. Hope you love inifinity signs with 800 names

And btw, for the assholes who always tell me how much they want to get into tattoos, you’re not going to be escaping customer service, if you’re a GOOD artist, you’re actually going to learn real quick that you’re putting yourself in the THICK of it.

I have bills to pay, mouths to feed, and even with my husband working, I am the main bread winner. So, when people act like I’m just the lazy artist who doesn’t want to socialize, it pisses me the fuck off because of COURSE I want time to catch up with life but the boot of capitalism is in my neck

When you have to make art for a living and keep interest in your business, YOUR CLIENTS make your schedule, not you. I was taught this since elementary school economics classes and I don’t understand this, “Oh, you can have all the days off you want” And where would the money come from these days?

So, by the time you get through all this, you realize, “Oh shit. I have little to no days off this month” the rest of the time is spent working on answering messages, preparing next day assignments, and doing a little bit of free art for your own sanity.

You may think, “Well, take off a Monday or slow days” but suddenly you’re getting messages from people with money to burn looking to get in right away or they will turn to other artists with that day off, so you take them in to build future clientele, as they will remember you made time for them.

Most people have weekends off, and that is the perfect time to work as an artist, so count weekends out. During the school year, clients who are parents will need weekdays during school hours to schedule, as then they don’t have to worry about babysitters. So, your days from 8-3 are usually for them

When you’re an artist who owns a business, the appeal is the idea of freedom but that is purely an idea a when you are an artist who still works in customer service, like my job. If you have a schedule that doesn’t have availability for those working 9-5’s, you’re going to have a rough time.

Absolutely breathtaking! That atmosphere using the embrace and moon is incredibly heavy!
