The two semi-cogent rationales you hear for tariffs are: 1/ (protectionism) tariffs will re-onshore jobs and industries by eliminating low cost competitors 2/ tariffs are great negotiating leverage to get concessions/better deals It can't be *both* though. The tariffs have to stay to make 1 work.

Wild to me the sentiment that America doesn't want to have manufacturing. Did you expect the world to just do it for you? We'll be the ruling class and developing countries can perpetually look towards us for service! They can't have a middle class? If manufacturing is so dismal maybe pay for it.
