lol well the nice thing is that if you read any of Hegel’s Realphilosophie seriously you have probably read more of it than the metaphysical Hegelians & Kantgelians—they have no idea what to do with it, & Rose’s line is IMO the only one that works as a point of departure for the system as a whole

one of Hegel’s only favorite poets is Rumi (he quotes him at the end of the encyclopedia & defends Sufism from Christian theologians lol), he gets mad excited about the early Islamic Caliphate in the PhilHist, so it’s not too far out there

So Dews’ Schelling is much closer to Rose’s Hegel (& mine) than Rose’s Hegel is to almost any contemporary Hegelian. Rose’s line on the Logic as a Phenomenology in HCS IMO shows Hegel “suspends the concept in history” precisely by seemingly removing it from history in the Logic

Dews (who follows Henrich & Frank) is right if the dominant reading of Hegel as a logic-foundationalist (shared by the “metaphysical” Hegelians like Taylor & Kreines & the Kantgelians like Pippin; & every1 from Pinkard to Houlgate in b/w) is right. I don’t think it is, for Rose & Hyppolite reasons

both are only “teleologically” structured in the sense that the goal is to return to the point you started (which is also true of genealogy as a method), which is why most crits of the PhG as “teleological” miss the entire fucking point lol

it should be read as a history of the present (Rose is right, there’s no real difference between Hegel’s PhG reconstruction & Nietzschean genealogy sorry losers) in 2 parts, one that suspends history in the concept & one that suspends concept in history

Hegel originally only wanted the book to be a rewriting of his earlier system of spirit work (consciousness, self-consciousness, reason—iirc), so the last 3 sections of the book (spirit, religion, absolute knowing) are quite literally the irruption of history into it

I’m happy to read them against one another however! As for Foucault, I think the bigger tragedy isn’t that he missed an earlier encounter with the Frankfurt School but that he failed to recognize how much more he had in common with Habermas than with Adorno & Horkheimer

It was common in the US too! but the identification of Derrida’s deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence with Adorno’s immanent critique of metaphysical immanence always domesticates Adorno into the a-conceptual quietism Derrida retains & radicalizes from Heidegger—exactly what Adorno refused

Foucault also said that he probably wouldn’t have been able to write what he did if he’d read the Frankfurt School earlier, and he was correct! & yes Derrida gets about as close to ND as a Heideggerian could, I have to give him credit where it’s due
