The Luddites took action against labor exploitation and the use of machines that produced an inferior product while depriving skilled workers of the wages they needed to survive. There's actually a lot to be learned from this history.

While our country isn't goose-stepping as much over here, I did make a similar point when proposals for a system to bring a lot of students personal sensitive wellbeing data and course data together and give far too many people access to it in a blanket way. Sigh.

Last semester, I had a teaching day where I taught 9-10, 11-12, 12-1, etc. I almost always ate my lunch by about 10:15.

Specifically the choices of oil and other additives, but I'm sure you know all that better than me.

Aside from pedantry about printing, movable type, and exactly who and when, I'd be more likely to talk about the change in ink. Without that development the whole project would fail.

If you have any issues, let us know. It isn't perfect but good for a lot of use cases.

I mean, given I'm on research leave, they don't notice the withholding of labour but... Getting rid of 5% of the university (300 FTE) because of their own financial mismanagement deserves protest.

Marshmallows? They are basically just comforting sugar and quiet to eat. Sad that you've even got to think about this. In almost 3 decades of UK HE teaching, I've never yet had to experience even a shelter-in-place drill nevermind an incident: evidence that another approach was once possible. 😢

Energy? I had energy? Need a good sleep! Was great meeting everyone and talking through the issues. I don't think there are any easy solutions without significant downsides, but that were need to keep figuring out things space and how to navigate it. Evaluation, as you said, would certainly help.

I hear it is 'sold out', but when something is free that means only 30% will show up. But thanks!

I may have at very least pointed out in my comments that Macbeth is a demonstration of the consequences of regicide, so not really subversive in that way. 😂

I seem to do this for real. Or at least have some slides but not really sure what I'm going to say to them. What's worse is then I've got up at 5am to go catch a train to down south, so feel jetlagged. This may or may not be my current situation as the train I'm on finally reaches the fens.

Even worse. I just marked a bunch of essays where students claimed Macbeth was subversive because it was written in an age of enlightenment. 🙄

😂 Cuz nothing says rational and emotionally controlled like the modern period. 😉

Spellchecking didn't really find those... As long as the words are spelled correctly! 😉 This is changing as we move to a world with spellcheck+AI where grammar checking and rewriting suggestions are all the same thing. Where our lethargy makes us assume its mediocre prose must be better than ours. 😢

Even better if you make a slide deck but someone else has to present it sight unseen. PowerPoint Roulette.

My own institution is cutting 300 FTE (about 5% of staff) owing to their own financial mismanagement. Our union has just overwhelmingly voted for local strike action, happening in March. If the institution were more like that, rather than barely being transparent, it might be a different story. 😢
