I'm not sure if we as technologists have done the best job of explaining (and marketing) what open source is and why it's important. I am not super invested in AI discourse, but it was interesting to see the DeepSeek incident pushing the phrase 'open source' into headlines.

All free for hobbyists, entrepreneurs, students, creatives, freelancers, businesses, govs etc. A shared digital infrastructure that compounds and lifts everyone in society up. Maybe the real Tragedy of the Commons are the commons that never meaningfully materialised

It's cool that the locations of FOSS4G events are always so varied - places I would probably not have been otherwise like Bonn (Germany), Boston (USA), Prizren (Kosovo) and Tartu (Estonia). One theme is that often the events are not in the capital, which encourages seeing more of said country

Nice! I looked at trying find a GeoParquet converter a while back and came across gpq. More recently I came across this pure JS implementation for converting to GeoParquet, it may be a bit easier to integrate or potentially faster: github.com/hyparam/geop...
