Why should it mostly be people who've suffered tragedy who are clear sighted enough to see the toll that an "on your side" attitude to driving inflicts on society. Risk comes with responsibility. The public perception of driving doesn't seem to take either seriously enough.

A sidewalk without purpose is just landscaping. Suburbs didn’t just forget to build mobility, they never intended it. Sidewalks lead nowhere useful, and walking is treated as recreation instead of transportation. That’s not a mistake. That’s the design.
