I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like making photos. Playing with Internet […] [bridged from https://mastodon.jamesoff.net/@jamesoff on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/ ]

Yes, I know that Amazon/AWS are not popular here. Yes, it is annoying that we have a 5-day RTO expectation. Yes it is annoying that we are only hiring in a handful of cities (NYC, Seattle, DC). Having said all that, if you'd like to come work with me and my colleagues securing customers who use […]

The wagamama at LHR T3 has gone, that’s messed up my Plans

A pile of beans on #Caturday from Chaos in the archives

Experimenting with charging the house batteries to 80% instead of 100% overnight now that solar is doing better during the day. It means we need less from the batteries during the day and can top them up more reliably too, and although we charge on […] [Original post on mastodon.jamesoff.net]

“He garnishes with micro herbs” *tweezers* “And macro herbs” *thud*

Totally misheard Great British Menu narration about someone cooking their fish dish with CMOS

“In everyone’s pocket right now is a computer far more powerful than the one we flew on Voyager. I don’t mean your cell phone — I mean the key fob that unlocks your car.” — Rich Terrile, JPL scientist and member of the Voyager imaging team #space

The badminton is doing a quiz where you login from your phone and the player names are scrolling on the big screen. A domain-specific variant of the Scunthorpe Problem would appear to be Shuttlecock, which got some asterisks at the end

A #SmashingSaturday is in store today! Yes the pun was intended #AllEnglandBadminton

TIL at last what the little extra notches around the rear service line on a badminton court are for (and I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember)

Watching the badminton in Birmingham (think it’s on iPlayer if you’re interested)

I've been trying to work my way through “type help", thanks to Andy Baio linking me to it, and I am stumped af. I'd love to look for help, but the only thing I can find is the very spoiler-dense contents section that I'm scared to read into because I want to get a *nudge*, not a complete solve […]

. @mrs_seward is looking at my follows for inspiration The most recent one is a browser. The next one “is the guy who does interesting videos on dishwashers and the colour brown.” This is very Mastodon.

UPS have shared this helpful photo of the delivery of my parcel. Note: the parcel isn't even in the frame.

First coating done on the whole car, seems successful. Started going round for the 2nd layer but the temperature has dropped a bit too much for it to flash off in sensible time (and the light in the garage by itself isn’t enough to tell when) so calling it a day for now.

Piano black trim is a swirl magnet :/ nearly done with the prep though, just a couple more panels to polish and then I can start with the coating

Today’s task: redo the ceramic coating on my car, which will be the first time I’ve tackled such a thing. Fingers crossed for not making a mess of applying it since it lasts about three years 😬 (Is there a #detailing mastodon? :)

At a conference talk, the host is trying to rev up the room and introduce the speaker. He asks “are you all having a good time so far?” And we all reply “yes” in typical middling level of enthusiasm. He yells “can I get some more enthusiasm” and we all spontaneously replied “No!”

@colen happy birthday :)

I'd like to find a #freelance #React developer willing to do a small one-off job. I assume this is in the hundreds of dollars, not thousands of dollars range. Boost for reach. I have helped a friend stand up a help desk suite (zammad), but I can't figure out how to get them a web form that […]

#Caturday

hmm some ffmpeg jobs on my mastodon server hit the CPU pretty hard and caused timeouts for the UI/API. Might have to see about a PR to run those jobs via nice(1), since renice(1)ing them was the fix for restoring service

I made this little workflow in #Alfred on my Mac to make it easier to grab a UUID while writing #HomeAssistant template entities.

Are the identifiers for my electricity meter sensitive info? :)

I added a sensor to tell me what the main source of power was too. It worked out easiest to just build a little dict in the jinja template and sort it by the value, instead of doing some nested/repetitive if thing :) (The hiccups are me reloading it while I tweaked it.) #HomeAssistant

Pleased with how my #HomeAssistant dashboard is coming along for monitoring our #solar, battery and grid usage. As well as pleased with how the solar/battery stuff is working out, especially as we start to get brighter (if not sunny) days.

@stefano @justine

hmm better get some more postgres, looks like I'm running out

Organising some stuff and soft-locked my brain with a USB-C cable, looking at a box for "A/V cables" and another for "USB cables"

That's the most brilliant alert I've ever come across: "Your 'Status' page is receiving way more page views than usual" Even if your other monitoring didn't catch it, the fact that a whole bunch of users are checking to see if the system is down is a pretty darn good canary.

Good job, Google.

Sonic would wish you a happy #caturday but he’s switched off

Currently driving though Catchall in Cornwall, which was presumably called that when they couldn’t think of any other names

Home Assistant 2025.2.0 updated the graph-rendering library for the frontend, and the new ones do look good but they don't seem to auto-update with new data :( #HomeAssistant

Due to a scheduling error (on their part not ours), our extra batteries for the solar inverter are getting installed while we're away until Sunday. Time to confirm all my hosts at home either power on when power is restored, or that WoL works on them from a host which does! (They're all on […]

./configure affirmations: -you have jobcontrol -your fifos are usable -your implementation is ok -your sockets are usable -you are normal

If anyone needs to flip the side of the car a head unit in a Mk6 VW Polo thinks the steering wheel is on (so e.g. CarPlay puts the dock on the correct side), it’s in controller 5F, long coding byte 3, bit 3. 0=LHD, 1=RHD; VCDS can do it. #LowAudienceToot
