I got lucky and ended up working in the Senate for 21 years, including 2 majority leaders and one of the greatest legislators in the history of that body. So called “democratic strategist”

“Tesla has now plummeted more than 40% since its December 18th all-time high.” @barchart.com $TSLA

Not holding townhalls because constituents are pissed off is the civic equivalent and stopping testing because that way the COVID numbers can't go up.

“.. when Trump spoke, he uttered a phrase that will no doubt stand tall among quotes from great American leaders past: ‘This country has gotten bloated and fat and disgusting.’” @rexhuppke.bsky.social @usatoday.com www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

There are about 67m Social Security beneficiaries, receiving about $1.3 trillion in benefits. About 60,000 people work for SSA, mostly in field offices and call centers to help seniors. They earn about $7 billion, or 0.5% of benefits. They've cut their admin costs in half since 2006. Efficiency!

Something that’s very clear is that Trump is old and checked out. He wants to play the role of president but has zero interest in doing the job and is happy to outsource the real work to Musk, Vought and a crew of feral zealots.

Is it bad if only 78 percent of Trump-loyal Republicans view democracy positively but 55 percent view an unchecked strongman positively? Asking for a fairly large nation. Gift link: wapo.st/4hLudP3

The Social Security Administration just put everybody who manages its agency website on administrative leave. "If there's a website problem, I don’t know who's gonna fix it." It also shuttered its civil rights office. www.nextgov.com/people/2025/...

Here's a free link to a piece published today in which I look at Republicans support for/indifference to Trump destroying democracy. wapo.st/4hLudP3

Cc; house and senate republicans

So now Fox Business is preparing their viewers for "a bit of temporary pain" amid Trump-Musk's DOGE cuts, saying that "people forget that when [Ronald Reagan] came into office in 1981, he slashed federal head count and put the economy back into the double dip recession of 1980 and 1981."

Important to note here that the SSA is already in a staffing crisis that goes back years and has built under D and R admins. The idea you're taking a breaking point situation and cutting staff in half ... is, well, you might as well just light it on fire.

Not a bad idea -- if House Republicans refuse to hold town halls in their congressional districts, local Democrats should set one of their own up.

As Trump promised, the Alien Enemies Act will be invoked. The law is a wartime authority that can be only used against any noncitizen from a country at war with the United States, regardless of whether they are in the country legally or not. Its use for immigration enforcement purposes is unlawful.

"It’s a familiar Silicon Valley mindset, the reason startups are forever reinventing a bus, or a bodega, or mail. It’s the implacable certainty that if you’re smart at one thing you must be smart at all of the things." www.wired.com/story/doge-i...

The word "fraud" is doing a whole lot of work in Trump's second administration.

Many of DOGE’s “wall of savings” and canceled contracts include many eye-popping “receipts.” There’s just one problem, @janetimm.bsky.social writes: Many of the so-called receipts aren’t receipts. They’re negotiated agreements with known government contractors, who might provide future services.

WhiteHouse/OMB out this afternoon with guidence on RIFs, this is the more formal and legal (when not violating the constitution) way of doing large scale government layoffs. Big new stage of the process. chcoc.gov/sites/defaul...

A president sitting and listening while his unelected rich friend chairs a Cabinet meeting is, among other things, incredibly weak. Another for the "how are you not more embarrassed — this looks so bad, even on your own terms" list.

The old American creed: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The new American creed: If some "very high-level people" want to pony up $5 million for a "Trump Gold Card," the White House will open the door to them. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Can’t wait

NEW: Indiana already has stringent voter ID rules... & the GOP is advancing a bill right now to strip university IDs from the list of options you can use. This would make it much harder for students to vote. At polling site at IU Bloomington, 2/3rds of voters in November used their student IDs.

This should prove to be real popular with seniors

“’Not touching Social Security’ is not the reality of this administration,” said a source familiar with the discussions at SSA in a message obtained by the Prospect. “Looking for government to fail and be replaced by private industry appears to be the goal.” prospect.org/health/socia...

“This is not about personal liberties or free markets. It’s about making the Post more amenable to the Trump administration so that Jeff Bezos’s businesses will not be punished.” @jvl.bsky.social

I just have no words for this. It’s catastrophic. The *first* phase is an enormous RIF, and then the second phase is to relocate the offices of those who are left so most of them don’t follow. It’s the complete implosion of the government.

And lots of Botox

Don't worry. James Carville says that Democrats should shut up and do nothing and everything will turn out great.

After the first measles death of a child HHS Secretary Kennedy seemed to downplay the Texas outbreak saying outbreaks were "not unusual," and the 18 kids hospitalized were "mainly for quarantine." A pediatrician on the ground said they couldn't breathe. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

Well, that was fucking crazy. Congrats America.

Confirmed to be an unvaxxed child. We have to talk about the foreign influence campaigns around vaccines. Hostile intelligence agencies — and their useful idiots in the US — are convincing the “do your own research” crowd to kill their children to own the libs.

Just wait for the howling that will come from the "meritocracy" crowd because their arbitrary terminations did not follow the longstanding merit selection rules codified by Congress.

REPORTER: Can you talk about what type of security guarantees you're willing to make to Ukraine? TRUMP: Well I'm not going to make security guarantees beyond very much. We're gonna have Europe do that.

I shared this note with the owner of the Washington Post this morning.

The YouTube Administration

It's clearly newsworthy. Taking it down is unquestionably the wrong move.
