Bollone, Valvestino

if you are a cis person it costs you nothing to just say today that you see & hear your trans sisters & brothers & others over in the UK today -- and around the world, too, knowing that rulings like today's ripple out in ugly ways.

24h left on the 15% off sale in the shop. Ends noon tomorrow, Thursday:

I’ve seen this small stop on the second Centre Block offered in publications as a portrait of Thomas Fuller (architect of the first Centre Block) but never much saw the likeness. Surely, if there’s a carving of Fuller on the building it’s the grotesque perched on a nearby gablet.

Easter decorations: check

Reading Marinetti’s manifesto of 1909 realizing that these chuds offer nothing new nothing interesting nothing meaningful just a rehash of that old Futurism cum Fascism. Just an aping of the same misogyny and cruelty and technophilia, only with less wit less self-awareness than old Filippo had.

My personal architectural favorite for Palm Sunday: the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. Not just for the fabulous palm capitals, but also the site for the premier of Bach's Johannes-Passion (1724).

1958 scheme for a model town at Iqaluit: a central thin-shell concrete dome housing community facilities, 700’ in diameter, with residential towers for 4500 people. Credited to E.A. Gardner, chief architect of the Department of Public Works, & Ted Fancott, chief of the Preliminary Design Division

today I'm taking wins where I find them

Design (to borrow from Pye’s The Nature & Art of Workmanship) is the part of making that can be communicated by abstraction like words & drawings; and workmanship is that part of making that can’t be. So the absent architect is here referenced by a sketch, and the stonecarver by a limb at work.

A great photo of capitals being carved in situ, post office, Woodstock, Ontario, ca. 1901 The carvings in the foreground are complete and the pinned drawing depicts the other-hand unfinished capitals just out view; the carver at work is barely visible as leg & foot & empty coat.

I’m not reposting anything with RFK Jr’s face on it out of respect for xour eyes but “autism epidemic” is like saying “freckles epidemic” or “cleft chin epidemic” it’s not a disease it’s just a way some people are and the thing we need to fix is a hostile societal framework.

Imagine hiring an artist-in-residence at a Canadian college, and then publicly censoring that artist for a “political statement” based on complaints by USAmericans during a Canadian sovereignty crisis. Did they WANT to be famous for all the wrong reasons? Kudos to the artist, shame on the college.

Canadian media: Artist Christopher Griffin (Ottawa and PEI based) has just left his Artist in Residence position at Atlantic Veterinary College because US professors objected to a painting. He was given the option of taking it down, or leaving. He left. @sproudfoot.bsky.social @seansnmurphy.ca
