The mass emails are going out to federal workers, with the subject line, "What did you do last week?" It asks workers to respond with 5 bullet points 'of what you accomplished'

Hello federal workers

Just a reminder - funding runs out for the federal government in 3 weeks on March 14. The 12 government funding bills were supposed to be finished by October 1 of last year. Congress hasn't done that job on time since 1996.

In today's 'Regular Order' ✅ GOP lawmakers take flak over DOGE cuts ✅ Senate okays limited budget blueprint ✅ House still pressing ahead with one bill ✅ McConnell sets off Bluegrass scramble jamiedupree.substack.com/p/republican...

Over on X, simple tweets by my colleague Greg Bluestein of the Atlanta Journal Constitution have been blocked. They were nothing but video of a town hall held by Rep. Rich McCormick R-GA where he was asked questions about DOGE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Republican Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in history, won't seek reelection next year.

Let's check in on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene R-GA today

Senate Republicans will go ahead and vote this week on their $342 billion budget resolution which focuses only on border security and defense. That means they are not waiting for the House to act on a budget outline for a giant tax and budget reconciliation measure.

There has been a lot of talk from DOGE about massive Social Security fraud being uncovered. But Republicans in Congress have made no announcements about any hearings or investigations - which probably tells you a lot about the (in)accuracy of those claims.

Rep. Mike Turner R-OH stays on the fence for now about the developing House GOP budget reconciliation plan. “I certainly don’t want to see a proposal that hurts people,” Turner said. More in my story for the Dayton Daily News. www.daytondailynews.com/local/how-da...

ATLANTA (AP) — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is losing one-tenth of its workforce under probationary employee cuts

The mass firings are underway in the federal government. And Republicans chalk up a big win for their tax and budget plan. More in today's 'Regular Order' jamiedupree.substack.com/p/mass-firin...

I'm getting reports from multiple federal agencies and departments that mass firings have started among probationary employees. If that's you and you want to tell your story, you can get me on Signal at jamiedupree.64

Senate confirms RFK Jr. as HHS Secretary. McConnell was the only GOP 'No' vote, his third against Trump nominees (RFK Jr, Hegseth, and Gabbard).

Rooting out wasteful spending is a good cause. But we sure aren't getting many details from Elon Musk and his DOGE team. Sunlight would be a good thing for both Musk and President Trump - more in my column for the @ajc www.ajc.com/politics/jam...

This new executive order from President Trump seems to lay the groundwork for firings of Foreign Service Officers. "Failure to faithfully implement the President’s policy is grounds for professional discipline, including separation." www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Latest egg price data. Dozen grade A egg average price now $4.95, almost double from one year ago.

House Republicans have released a budget outline which includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and raises the debt ceiling by $4 trillion. Full doc at docs.house.gov/meetings/BU/...

Associated Press reporters at the White House were barred from an Oval Office event today with the President - because the AP won't use Trump's new name 'Gulf of America' www.ap.org/the-definiti...

Rep. Buddy Carter R-GA has a new bill - which renames Greenland (after the US acquires it)

House Speaker Mike Johnson says the courts should back off cases challenging the budget-cutting work of billionaire Elon Musk & DOGE: "The courts should take a step back and let the processes play out.”

Federal Reserve chair Powell to Congress today: ✅ "Economic activity has continued to expand at a solid pace" ✅ "In the labor market, conditions remain solid" ✅ "Inflation has eased significantly over the past two years but remains somewhat elevated"

With the House GOP stuck on a budget resolution, the Freedom Caucus has floated a $200 billion border security / defense reconciliation bill (fully offset) plus a $4 trillion debt limit extension. This is a 2-bill approach like GOP Senators favor.

I've had some people tell me that President Trump can't stop production of the penny coin - but if you look at federal law, the Treasury Secretary clearly has the power to *not* produce coins if that's the Secretary's determination. 31 USC §5111

Sen. Susan Collins R-ME says the White House cannot modify 'indirect' cost rate caps for NIH research grants - pointing out language in a funding bill passed in March 2024 which she says prohibits such changes. www.congress.gov/118/plaws/pu...

President Trump says the U.S. will stop making pennies

President Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he will impose 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports starting on Monday. Trump said that on Tuesday, he would announce new 'reciprocal tariffs' as well.

Vice President JD Vance today: "Judges aren't allowed to control the executive's legitimate power."

Is this worse than USAID buying newspaper subscriptions or better?

Here is part of the legislative language passed by Congress (and signed into law) in March 2024 related to USAID. This is a section that seems to bar reorganization / downsizing. Page 1153 at the link. www.congress.gov/118/cprt/HPR...

Actual message for me today

RFK Jr. approved for HHS Secretary by the Senate Finance Committee on a party line vote of 14-13. Next stop is the Senate floor.

Sometimes history repeats

If the 'Mexico agrees to send 10,000 troops to the border' announcement sounds familiar, that's because the Mexican government did the same thing in a 2021 deal with Biden

Congress approved money to run USAID. Trump is evidently ready to shut it down. The Constitutional crisis may already be here. WASHINGTON (AP) — USAID notice instructs staffers not to go to agency headquarters Monday, after Musk said Trump agreed to shut it down.

President Trump has put 25 percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, and those nations have retaliated with their own tariffs against US products. Okay, so now what?

Tulare County in California voted 59-38% for Donald Trump in 2024. Now officials there are wondering why President Trump is opening dams and wasting water sjvwater.org/trumps-emerg...

Only a couple of Republicans in Congress have said anything about President Trump's 25 percent tariff plan on goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Sen. Rand Paul R-KY: "Tariffs are simply taxes."

Wall Street Journal editorial board weighs in on Trump tariffs

Pentagon bans any events for 'identity months'

Can anyone think of a comp where a new administration comes into office and starts firing federal employees in retribution for the government work that they had done previously

Current reaction in Congress to President Trump's tariff announcement. Democrats: this means higher prices for food, gas, groceries. Republicans:

Tariffs collected from U.S. importers: 2016 - $35 billion 2017 - $35 billion 2018 - $41 billion 2019 - $71 billion 2020 - $69 billion 2021 - $80 billion 2022 - $100 billion 2023 - $80 billion 2024 - $77 billion

All of us know that the Founding Fathers wanted Congress in charge of spending. But what President Trump is trying to do is make those decisions himself - no matter what Congress has approved. That would be a dramatic change. www.ajc.com/politics/opi...

Prices may be going up on all sorts of stuff. President Trump says he's ready to slap 25 percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting on Saturday. Will he actually do it? More in today's 'Regular Order' jamiedupree.substack.com/p/trump-read...

The Trump White House has rescinded that budget memo from earlier this week which froze federal grants and caused all sorts of confusion about funding approved by Congress.
