Essential update on Enbridge Line 5 from @jeffreyinsko.bsky.social, and some must-read thoughts on why pipelines aren't inevitable even if the current admin acts like they are. thecurrentowdm.substack.com/p/lets-be-bu...

I loved talking last week with the incomparable @dominicboyer.bsky.social and @cymene.bsky.social on the Cultures of Energy Podcast. We chatted about my book, Moby-Dick, and cultural fossils. Available on your podcast apps and here: cenhs.libsyn.com/224-peak-wha...

OK, call your reps/senators this morning! Now is the moment! Here's what I said: "Ask the senator not to agree to any budget or spending bill without a binding agreement that DOGE, Elon Musk, and Trump must STOP dismantling federal agencies NOW."

Sharing this once more on our roadtrip home. If I can compile & post the thread even while traveling up the eastern seaboard, everybody who sees it can share all this great work, right? 🗃️ @hcrichardson.bsky.social

Live from my childhood home in Charlottesville, I’ve just shared my 213th #ScholarSunday thread of great public scholarly writing & work, podcast episodes, new & forthcoming books from the past week. Share widely & enjoy, all! 🗃️ americanstudier.substack.com/p/scholarsun...

I finally had a chance to sit down this morning & 1. order more paper 2. set up a form for folks to donate to the press & receive a poster/digital file We’re asking for a $35 dollar donation for posters—we will make up to 200 $5 for a high-quality digital version Here’s the form—& please share!

Are you an #envhum scholar looking to make a difference for the field? Become a co-editor of the journal Environmental Humanities! We need a new set of 2 co-editors to replace Franklin & I from Jan 2026. See the call here: environmentalhumanities.org Contact us if you have any questions.

TOMORROW, on Presidents' Day, "Not My President" protests in every US state. Look online to find yours. I'll be there! (Not enough people know about these protests, so please repost freely. Thx.)

Happy Valentine's Day to @5calls.org and to everyone who makes calls to protest galloping fascism and the dismantling of our government! 💕

Scoop: Anti-wind activists have joined forces with well-connected figures in conservative legal and energy circles to privately lobby the Trump admin to override scientific decisions by NOAA. The goal? Stop offshore wind projects under construction. heatmap.news/plus/the-fig...

A reminder that four years ago artists & activists installed a bust of Marsha P. Johnson in Christopher Street park without permission. We'll be needing more of this in the coming years! www.cnn.com/2021/08/28/u...

you’re seeing more literal erasure of trans people from history every day *every* day. right now. there’d be NO Stonewall without trans people it’s absolutely enraging cis queer folk, we need you to not stand for this. don’t let them erase us. WE. HAVE. ALWAYS. EXISTED.

Humanists: is there any collective action happening around the new NEH guidelines? By which I mean anything collective: conversations, sharing of info about grant apps related to race and gender studies, discussion about boycotting? Anything happening?

In our present dystopia, perhaps you wish to explore "Blue Utopias: Utopian Dreams on Sea and Shore," the theme of the 50th Utopian Studies conference? I'm honored to be keynoting (talk title “Polar Erratics: In and Out of Place in Circumpolar Seas”). Conf info: utopian-studies.org/conference20...

Would love to talk to any and all academics about this for a story. DMs are open, Signal's in my bio ✌️

Because I received a grant from the NEH in the past, I have been asked to serve as a panelist in reviewing applications this year. Here is the email I sent in response to the invitation.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

Thank you so much @ericcalderwood.bsky.social for sending me a copy of your book, Colonial al-Andalus: Spain and the Making of Modern Moroccan Culture. Looking forward to reading and assigning it! 🥳

Microsoft study finds AI makes human cognition “atrophied and unprepared” 🔗 www.404media.co/microsoft-st...

The NEH has decided to comply with fascist dictat. www.neh.gov/sites/defaul...

This is why I’ve railed against AI for years, as I’ve been seeing my students’ abilities to create, critically think, analyze, weigh evidence, write analytically all wither away in this zombification trend. They’re creating the permanent underclass.

The CFPB was dismantled over the weekend, with all activities suspended, its funding reduced to zero, and its headquarters temporarily closed—removing a crucial layer of oversight for consumer-facing financial companies. Staff members ordered to cease all ‘supervision and examination activities.

There are already impacts on all of us since Trump closed USAID. This soy research lab is just one of many bad consequences for America.

how much will your state's economy be decimated by withdrawn NIH funding? here's a handy fact finder; call your reps, especially your rep reps and tell them www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

This made me feel better, because Jamelle Bouie is looking reality right in the face, and using the right words to describe it. I choose to believe the courts, and the people, who wanted none of this, can yet save our republic. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

But shall this crazed old man be tamely suffered to drag a whole ship’s company down to doom with him?

Amid and despite *all this* (this is fine), I'll be visiting Northwestern University tomorrow to give a talk on Moby-Dick, metaphors, and my favorite cetacean art of the last several years by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Wu Tsang, and mayfield brooks. Chicagoans I'd love to see you!

Read, share, act.

Omg I had to check and yes this is real www.marinetraffic.com/it/ais/detai...

Just days after Trump returned to the White House, Instagram is censoring abortion content. This is what Aid Access' account looks like right now - posts about how to get abortion medication has been blurred out.

At least for now, many offshore wind projects in the Northeast are unaffected by President's Trump wind executive order. #energysky

Words I am already tired of: "loyalist" and "breaking"

Milwaukee, 1928 “Leaving Milwaukee harbor via tugboat, this was the final voyage of the Lucia B. Simpson (1875). The Simpson was the last of the lake lumber schooners.” Wisconsin Historical Society

This is astonishing:

Rare to read two bangers in a row: this book is real 🔥 🔥 🔥. A mix of cultural and environmental history, memoir and literary, weaving colonialism, race and environmental history in a Caribbean-centered global history. Truly a must-read

“In order to shoot off one email per week for a year, ChatGPT would use up 27 liters of water, or about one-and-a-half jugs… that means if one in 10 U.S. residents—16 million people—asked ChatGPT to write an email a week, it’d cost more than 435 million liters of water.”

When World War II broke out, and "nations repurposed many of their whaling ships for the global conflict, whales experienced a rare moment of respite." www.biographic.com/how-whales-f...

Stunning cowardice by the AHA Council. For shame. "The Council considers the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide in Gaza ... to contravene the Association’s Constitution and Bylaws because it lies outside the scope of the Association’s mission and purpose." 🗃️ www.historians.org/news/busines...
