LIS reunion! March 1, Luxembourg. Tim Smeeding, Teresa Munzi, Caroline de Tombeur, Thierry Kruten, Marc Cigrang, Serge Allegrezza, Branko Milanovic, moi. We've spent collective 250+ years with LIS and we all remain dedicated to cross-national data and research, no matter what. @lisdata.bsky.social

Kudos to our colleagues at LIS and LSE! Thought-provoking papers, informed discussions, new faces ... and all brilliantly organized. Stay tuned for LIS' announcement about the posting of all of the slides. @lisdata.bsky.social, @lseinequalities.bsky.social, @stone-lis.bsky.social πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Memorable event in Luxembourg! Chico Ferreira & I had the pleasure of talking with @brankomilan.bsky.social about "Visions of #Inequality". Merci to our excellent hosts: @lisdata.bsky.social, @liser.lu, @uni.lu. Brilliant audience of about 150. @stone-lis.bsky.social @lseinequalities.bsky.social

www.lisdatacenter.org/news-and-eve... At JFK en route to Luxembourg. Looking forward to a tremendous LSE/LIS conference. Impressive presence from our GC-CUNY @stone-lis.bsky.social center. Happy to see my 50 best friends this week (and to work hard, course.) πŸ™

This is too crazy for words.

New York City apparently has something to say this morning.

I have a question: real not rhetorical. Why do so many people/families watch American football? Uncontested research reveals horrifying % of players who develop Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy due to head trauma; countless lives are ruined. Why are fans comfortable enabling this? Serious question.

Here is a more direct path to this memorable interview: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rei...

Tonight, I re-listened to Laleh Behbehanian interview Michael Burawoy, as part of "Journeys Through Sociology", from 2011. This is a remarkable half hour. He left an immense mark on sociology and beyond. RIP. www.google.com/search?clien...

A view from within. I'm running out of words. "Unprecedented" has lost all meaning.

Feb 20, 1pm NYC time: We - @stone-lis.bsky.social - are a proud to co-host a webinar on unpacking income inequality. James Ziliak (Univ Kentucky) will explore how labor market & disposable income inequalities have evolved across countries. Register now: povertycenter.columbia.edu/events/semin...

Super interesting, both methods and findings. "This method holds potential for expanding the range of countries and years in which wealth concentration can be estimated..."πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ @morellisal.bsky.social @stone-lis.bsky.social

PAA & the Association of Population Centers call for re-opening access to crucial #data, to enable research on health and wellbeing. Blocking these data is nonsensical. We researchers must not surrender. This is a time to make good trouble. @stone-lis.bsky.social @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social

I'm attending this @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social March 25th, featuring @pkrugman.bsky.social in conversation with Zachary D. Carter about the continued relevance of the great economist John Maynard Keynes (pronounced Canes) Join me !! #ECON4All #EconSky #TeachEcon www.gc.cuny.edu/events/price...

I thought this leaked memo was from The Onion, but no, the AP verifies it. "The memo’s authenticity was confirmed by a U.S. official..." Most immediately, given that it starts tomorrow, I'd like to know why DIA officials find Black History Month to be unacceptable. That said, I think I know.

I bet my life that RFK Jr. is home this eve looking up Medicaid and Medicare on Wikipedia. This word salad revealed that he has pretty much zero idea what Medicaid is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO7h...

Part of me says stay out of this but another part of me says otherwise. The researcher in me loves a useful diagram.

The tireless Cecile Richards left this earth today - sad news on a sad day. Here she is in 2018 on #Democracy Now with Amy Goodman, talking about making trouble. SocArXiv is proud to host this important working paper series. Congratulations!

We have long known that economic mobility varies across localities within the US. This innovative data-rich article presents remarkable evidence as to *why*. The CUNY GC Stone Center's Working Paper Series - launched in February 2020 - just posted its 100th paper. We are grateful to our senior scholars, postdocs, and affiliated scholars for contributing these 100 excellent papers on #inequality. To the next 100! stonecenter.gc.cuny.edu/research-dat...

Recently (incl today) four journalists have asked me to explain why the % of US children living in single-parent families has skyrocketed. But ... it hasn't. What is real is the US’ cross-nationally high poverty rates but that's a different story. Chart from LIS Key Figures. @stone-lis.bsky.social

Reading matter!πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

It's holiday eve in NYC, a city beloved by many, tough for some, sanctuary for others. Now 2025 is upon us. It's impossible to imagine what the new year holds. What I do know is that we, in the US, must hold our leaders accountable. Countless lives here and around the world depend on it. #ceasefire

Seeing Chrystia Freeland in the news reminds me of the immensely memorable event that we (CUNY GC) hosted in May 2013. The late great Tony Atkinson in conversation with Paul Krugman, moderated by Christia Freeland. @pkrugman.bsky.social @stone-lis.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAFC...

"People are asking" so I'll reply. No, Paul Krugman is not leaving NYC, CUNY, the Grad Center, or the Stone Center. He remains in our CUNY community! Paul, your friends at the Stone Center wish you the best as you sail into (some) new waters. 🍷 @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social @stone-lis.bsky.social
