Writing a paper on big archaeological data and I'm looking for examples of archaeological sites which have complex databases (published) of all excavated information (features, finds, artefacts, ecofacts, environmental archaeology, geophysics, lidar, you name it ...). Thanks! 🏺

The European Journal of Archaeology, the official journal of the EAA and published by Cambridge University Press, is seeking to appoint a Deputy Editor, to take up office in Sept 2025. If you think this post is for you, have a look at the details here 👀

Scientists recently unearthed remnants of a ~5900-year-old pine forest melting out of alpine ice high in the Rockies. 🌲🧪🏺 The rare find reveals an exceptional view of our recent climate past, including the effects of Icelandic volcanos on global temperatures. New from me @newscientist.bsky.social

2024 daily temperatures compared to past years. A frightening graphic from the BBC. #ClimateEmergency

All these look exciting!

You can still apply! 10th of January is the deadline.

First winter hiking trip of the season and with absolutely amazing visibility over hundreds of kilometers stretching through the former Czechoslovakia from the Krkonoše Mountains to High Tatras. It's good to be home.

Btw. I'm looking for a PhD student in zooarchaeology with an interest in stable isotopes. www.arup.cas.cz/vyberove-riz...

While on the move from London to Czech Republic I received good news! My project application received funding and from January I can set up a small team in Prague diving into investigations of interactions between humans, woodland and herbivores during the prehistory.

Last day in my office at @uclarchaeology.bsky.social. It was great to have these views on London from the 6th floor for 2,5 years!

Starter pack of starter packs? 🏺

Tempted to make a starter pack of bsky profiles which didn't make a starter pack.

Get aurochsen, get aurochsen genomes. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🏺Although we are a new journal (Quaternary Environments and Humans) one of our paper got a coverage from New Scientist! Congrats to the authors - M. Kempf and S. Denis. institutions.newscientist.com/article/2453...

We raked through thousands of publications to gather scientific data on human past from archaeological contexts. Sometimes we get very sad and frustrated that the way how archaeologists publish prevents all the others from using their data. We need to change this! www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

I refused to submit a job application where a condition for applying was to pay the advertising university over 200 EUR for verification of my PhD diploma. All within the EU where there shouldn't be barriers like this. WTF!

Mind-blowing! The stones of Stonehenge originate from three different locations - and the recent discoveries place the source of the Altar Stone to Scotland or even Orkneys.

Holiday is over, now having very different views from my office in London preparing for the EAA in Rome.

Hmm…‘One simple trick’ Paris used to reduce air pollution 40% ahead of the Olympics. Is it cloud seeding? Tell me it's cloud seeding. Oh no, it's kicking out cars.

7 months till the end of my current contract - another job application submitted today ... yay!

The Journal of Archaeological Science (JAS) now does a "reproducibility review" as part of the submission process: www.elsevier.com/connect/how-... If your manuscript mentions using an open source programming language, it will get this review, in addition to the normal peer reviews.
