Yes! Lingodeer or Renshuu are the most similar while being gen AI free.

What language(s) are you learning?

Do what makes you happy! As an old weeb who used anime as motivation to study Japanese for 19 years and now lives and works in Japan, I say there's nothing to be embarrassed by.

If anyone's learning Japanese, here are some alternative apps that don't use AI.

They're changing to entirely AI.

And employees that still hung on have reported how bad it is.

They removed all access to the community courses from regular Memrise. They actively hid them, removing them from public.

Luckily I was able to download the ones I'd made on Memrise and make Anki decks for the beginner levels.

Like this one? (Although it only covers apps for Japanese.)

I really like the art too. It reminds me of Satoshi Kon's style (but without the trippy story telling).

If using your PC in Japanese doesn't help, then you don't have to use it. Or you can write down and study the Japanese terms on your PC. But there are other ways you can immerse depending on your level.
comment in response to
post
The most efficient way to learn from immersion is to use materials that are a little above your level, where you understand 90% of the content. This reinforces stuff you already know while teaching you new things without being overwhelming.

Ringotan
Another free app for Android and iOS that teaches you kanji through writing. It's impressive how good it is at making you learn how to write kanji correctly.
(The mascot is a little terrifying though...)

Renshuu
I didn't realise this all was free, so I'm adding it to the list!
Renshuu is entirely human made app for Android and iOS. It helps you learn almost all aspects of Japanese--vocab, grammar, kanji, through a variety of study methods (which is great for learners with ADHD).

If you want to avoid companies that use gen AI then you might want to avoid Mango.

That makes sense! Thank you. And yeah, Kanji in Context is useful but a bit dry.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Korean! I started studying it too and need to practice more.

You also don't need to know all 2200 kanji. Even as an advanced learner 1500ish is enough to allow me to read native books. But even then vocabulary and grammar matter a lot more for fluency.
comment in response to
post
Honest question, but why would you study kanji without grammar?
Vocabulary and grammar are way more important than kanji because they let you use the language, which is more motivating that just drilling. You also only need to know 100-200 kanji as a beginner.

That's how it gets you. Its game loop is designed to get you addicted to it and make you feel like you're learning while not teaching you anything. The streak feature is particularly nefarious, but there are other apps that have streaks if that helps keep you motivated.

These apps for Japanese don't use AI! Renshuu and Lingodeer are your two best options for apps that are similar to Duolingo.

Have I got good news for you. Zenshu is a 2010s style Isekai with an older woman (not high school girl) as the main character. (Two out of three's not bad.)

My Japanese friend read all of the Game of Thrones books and started dropping archaic/British words that confused her American spouse. It was great 😂 It was also fantastic English practice for her.

If you're serious about learning Japanese for a trip in three weeks, the honest answer is to get a phrase book, memorize key phrases, practice speaking them by heart every day, and maybe get a teacher to practice with.

Hey! I have never ever heard this, but I also don't have kids. It could be similar to the west where you g kids accidentally call their teacher "mom". (Although "mother" would be weird for a kid to say.)

Also, if anyone finds this useful please consider leaving a tip. I've run this website without ads for about a decade now but hosting has become increasingly expensive in recent years (£240 for two sites). So any little helps a lot!
