The site's had some unexpected headaches during migration, so you can listen from the attached link or by searching "Japan On Film" on your podcast app. traffic.megaphone.fm/WHYNOW759967...

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better midnight movie to watch with friends over beer and pizza.

It's definitely an experience and only now do I think I get it.

The director said the meaning of the title is the war brought Japan down to zero. So when Godzilla attacks, it brings the country down a step further to Minus One.

I didn't even know he was in Shogun! This should really push it to the top of my watchlist.

Hiroyuki Sanada is amazing in this.

I don't think this holds up as well as some of the other J-horror films, but it's still good.

Not my favorite Kore-eda film, but a very good one nonetheless.

Not as shocking as Sono's other work, but still very good.

Of course, can't leave off this infamous film.

Yeah, that runtime is primarily what's been hlding me back. And with that content, I'd definitely have to wait until the kids are asleep.

And yet another Kore-eda pick. This was the first of his movies I saw, all about the power of memory.

I'll be honest here: I haven't seen this movie in like 20 years, but I do remember really liking it when I first saw it. I'm overdue for a rewatch.

All focused on the decision for Japan to surrender and the attempted coup. Koji Yakusho is especially good in this (yeah, I know he's good in everything).

Fair warning: this movie will destroy you.

A documentary about being multiracial in Japan. Hits me even more since my kids are multiracial.

One of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's more unsettling pictures.

Another Kore-eda flick. Not as gut-wrenching as a lot of his stuff, just a really good story. Being a father myself, this really hit me.
