This picture didn't turn out exactly as I'd hoped, but I do really like that you can see the reflection of the sunset over the ocean in this Black Phoebe's eye #birds

Check out this incredible shot by @charlesdavisphoto.bsky.social. The tree in this photo is dead, so all the green you see is made up of tens of thousands of Budgies! #Birds #Budgies #Nature #Photography

Bagworms are unambiguously S tier creatures

Expressing my frustration about something this morning Partner: "I know, I know. Capitalism, Individualism, we have heard the story" πŸ’€πŸ’€

Exactly! We have shifted to a world where *everything* is for sale. This has seeped into academia but also the science itself e.g., carbon credits. Suggesting pay for reviews misses the root causes: overworked academics, low value of service activities (despite what job committees say) etc..

I wont be surprised if it becomes unusable, so what's the best free alternative to Google Scholar? Maybe in the mould of the Internet Archive? Ideally without AI summaries. πŸ§ͺ

I'm often upset that Beyonce is both a fabulous diva genius and basically a billionaire πŸ₯²

The Trump Administration announced massive cuts to NIH indirect costs yesterday. The maximum indirect rate will now be 15%, slashing the rates our universities receive. Most universities are accustomed to receiving 45-65% on each grant. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Ignoring a few decades of media/political environment, Ezra Klein thinks that in creating cycles of outrage or fear, you "overwhelm yourself". This is a serious miscalculation. I agree, don't get overwhelmed. Sure, don't believe him. But mobilise and build safeguards as if you did.

I think I saw Larry David do a bit about this (stolen advice for a stolen thread): Pee before you go. Go where? Anywhere. Just pee before you go.

Dear @microsoft.com I do NOT want this copilot bs, I just want to type my documents and make some slides.

This is what leadership from a scientific society looks like. Bravo @amornith.bsky.social πŸ§ͺ

Apropos of nothing, a passage from Levins & Lewontin's Dialectical Biologist

It's been about 5 months into my attempt to propagate succulents from leaves and I'm so proud of these babies πŸ₯Ή

Today is Retraction Day, when we observe the anniversary of the retraction (Feb. 2, 2010) of the fraudulent paper that purported to show a link between vaccines and autism. πŸ§ͺ#medsky

I'm so tired of hearing the take that diversity is good for productivity or resilience or promoting creativity. The focus should be on justice and removing restrictions/barriers to access. It is a moral imperative. Any other gains are welcome but incidental.

Hi new followers (bots and real people alike 😝). I'm not here to collect followers but it'll take me some time to go through and follow back people with shared interests etc. In the meantime here's a nice bird ✌🏽 Expect more birds, science, politics and occasional shitposting :)

So much likely at play here: culture wars, news coverage, misinformation, scapegoating... but I suspect this is also because we're bad at dealing with large numbers (cognitively). I could easily tell you similar stats about my apt building but will probably be really inaccurate for my state.

I feel like we can't all care about/act upon every big issueβ€”the inevitable burnout, apathy or feeling of being overwhelmed isn't what's needed (and probably by design). Pick one or a few causes and pursue them doggedly.
