I like Paterson Joseph who has a last name first name swap. That's my favourite thing. Correct number, wrong place.

My mother never let me do the readathon, the one competitive thing in my elementary school life I would have absolutely aced, because she (admittedly correctly) knew she would never be able to winkle me free of a book for the duration.

The single exception to this being "Like Water For Chocolate", which did not scar me in any way, but definitely confused and gave me some strange ideas about a few things for a little while. (When I told Mum this many, many years later, she nearly choked laughing.)

You know what's weird is that actually I kind of didn't. This was not because I didn't have access to it, or because I was being excessively monitored. I just had this weird ability to pick up things that I wasn't ready for yet, read a few lines, go "ehhn" and put it back.

And that makes me really happy.

I recently discovered that my fellow tour guides all think I'm really confident and fearless! I'm -- -- not that. But I do kinda feel like if I can be seen like that at training, and even feel a bit like that at training, that maybe one day I can seem and even a bit be like that on tours.

But it's definitely up there, and I'm very tired so I'm going to bed now.

I fear it further.

I... I fear it.

I suspect my mother probably got me to pay with a cheque as practice at some point when I was in primary school. I don't think I've ever paid for anything by cheque because it was the easy, logical or only choice.
comment in response to post
I mean the encyclopedias didn't belong to ME, they were my PARENTS', but they were in my house and for my use. Otherwise, it's possible I never paid for anything with a cheque, but being as I've had a bank account since I was 9 and at one point definitely had a chequebook, I probably did.

Not discounting the above! That is terrible, and not deserved regardless. But she was, at one point, also individually unpleasant to a lot of people under her own power also.
comment in response to post
To be fair, I met her two decades ago and she was just... really rude and awful to so, so many people.

I mean, I think someone would have to fund the trip and the hotel, but if you find a willing benefactor...

I am so so so so so so serious about it. I really want to go to the Expo, probably more than once.

YES

She won't, you know. She's done... a lot of stuff, and she's yet to show any ability to self-reflect. I'm almost as furious at her. There's no way she didn't know.

Yes. But they were there. And that they were there influences everything that was around them. And there are many who are still there, too.

... I'm so glad I was too young. I'm so glad there are parts of the fandom to which you and I belong that are truly decent.

I was too young back then. I missed that one. But it sounds like his dalliances back then were maybe more likely to be consensual? Still. One wonders.
comment in response to post
Are there any of them, even one, who would actually see me as a human? (The answer to that so far does still seem to be 'yes', but... It still hurts when you realize how often the answer is 'no'.)

You are, of course, 100% correct, especially in the face of clear evidence of people actively idolizing you rather than just being like "he seems like a nice dude". But, for me anyway; I swear, it's not about adulation any more. It's just, if I met any guy who ever made any art I ever liked --
comment in response to post
I didn't know it at the time. But looking back. Doubt they could have protected me from something like this, but I had a stable support system and predators like HIM can smell that. I was so lucky. It was just luck.
comment in response to post
And yes. Obviously. Not all men. I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons my own growing up in fandom didn't end like this but with a not-famous person was because I had a bunch of male nerds make it clear to just... everyone... that we were KIDS and that is how we were going to be treated.

Oh the mouse the mouse the mouse. The phone cord always drove me nuts because it would get twisted around or develop kinks or just be in some way Incorrect and accordingly drive me nuts, so that's out for me. The older cassette player buttons were a marvel though. And I loooooved cleaning the mouse.

Ohhhhhh I haven't watched it in English but he would be EXCELLENT at that role. He's such a good voice actor.

A little digging shows that the animation director was indeed a key animator on two Ghibli movies (Nausicaa and Laputa), as well as on a bunch of Ghibli-affiliated projects. The style is unmistakable.

That's not possible. That's a bad goal.

(they actually mostly sell salt over here, but also powered MSG. But in Peru they specialize in MSG, apparently.)

Me: No, it's Japanese. Aji no moto. The origin of flavour. It's a Japanese company. It's Japanese. Sister: ... Ah. Okay.
comment in response to post
You can buy it here and also in Peru. I know this because my sister (living in Peru at the time) was like "Shasta, you can buy MSG here! It's called 'ajinomoto'--" (pronounced ahinomoto, Spanish style) Me: "aji no moto" (pronounced Japanese style with a hard j) Sister: Nooo, it's *Spanish* --

I certainly taught them some by accident ^^; but I'm a tour guide now! And actually I get a lot of Australians, which is GREAT, but older and I think sook belongs somewhat to a younger demographic maybe...? Not YOUNG, but younger than like, 65

I'm diagnosed so I'll live longer! Oh, what's that? You've got to be treated, too? By the meds that actually work and are illegal where you live..? *SIGH*
