I think every game should come with a little tag saying how much it cost to make

One of the things I really love about Avowed is that it never feels like it's wasting your time. It knows exactly what it wants to do — no more, no less. Reviews docked it for not offering innovation or sprawling systems, but that focus is what makes it great

I think maybe people expected it to be something it's not

The second region especially is very Morrowind

Yeah you're spot on. One fun comparison: by that point GTA4 had sold 25 million copies. As of this month GTA5 has sold 210 million copies

The industry definitely wasn't healthier back then (THQ had just imploded and all the analysts thought consoles were dead and Zynga was the next big thing) but nobody really expected GTAV to do what it did. People just thought it'd be a big new launch. The online was an after-thought (and came late)

Take-Two owns it

One of the most tragic parts of this story is that it's left throngs of artists and designers with massive gaps in their portfolios — work both old and new, sometimes years in the making, that can't be shown to prospective employers, even if it was probably discarded by now

I covered Irrational in my second book Press Reset and I wrote a story for Bloomberg about Ghost Story a few years ago. Lots in both stories about Levine's management style

Bugginess was a common complaint yeah, but there were also a ton of critics saying it was more of the same, the side quests were too mundane etc
comment in response to post
I've been taking my time, exploring as many hidden passages as possible, and doing every side quest, so it hasn't been an issue for me

Nah, I think even Alpha Protocol's most loyal defenders would acknowledge that it's a pretty busted game. But New Vegas having an 84 Metacritic while Fallout 3 has an 93 and Fallout 4 has an 87 is a fascinating departure from widespread consensus

The mainline story is never as interesting in these types of RPGs as the little narrative moments, anyway, and Avowed is full of those

I bounced off it pretty quickly. Didn't grab me like Avowed did
comment in response to post
I'm a little surprised reading some of these reviews but I suspect that Avowed could wind up like Fallout: New Vegas, where there's a vast gap between the critical reception and overall player consensus

It's a deluge of proper nouns but there's a helpful glossary function that lets you look them up mid-dialogue

It's why I bounced off Starfield (and even The Outer Worlds) but Avowed has the juice

Oh Dan and I agree on most things, except for maybe the merits of vegetables

I reserve raving for games that truly deserve it!

Some have treasures behind them, others have gangs of genocidal maniacs

I'll be there. will also have an interview with Avowed's director up next week

I will have lots to say about it!

In this case the developer is owned by the publisher, so they'd need approval from their corporate parents before a project can get funding

I don't remember... I think it was right away tbh
