I don't know of any studies or references, offhand. There's certainly plenty of fiction-turned-game material to study out there, in both tabletop and digital gaming.

The D&D adventure these come with is part of the "Jewel of the North" series, all for which I did the graphic design and one of which I wrote! It's a series of four adventures set in the city of Neverwinter--you know, from the D&D movie 😉

The traditional set comes with 54 cards, but I only made 24 for the sake of the adventure. I eventually want to create the remaining 30 cards of the set and will hopefully make that a project for the upcoming year.
