My birth state is New York (thankfully, a Blue state). They allowed me to change my name (with a court order) and my gender (no docs necessary). My SSA has my name changed, but I can't get my gender updated. AFAIK, SSA isn't the official reason why they're holding up my passport...

I couldn't even get a passport. They sent me a letter saying my birth certificate was "amended", and they want "an original". I don't have "an original", and any copies I get from the state won't be "original". I tried to get legal advice, to no avail. Not sure what I can do now...
