We need true autonomy over our bodies.
Medical misogyny has killed and harmed too many of us.
We need the legal right to decide what is best for ourselves and that right needs to extend to our wombs.

I've read a few romances with ace/aro characters and it is a complex identity to handle no question. Syncopation is one of the stand outs, just for being upfront about it.

I think the author did a good job of making it clear that both MC had their needs met by the relationship. Ideally characters are individuals with different love languages, goals and libidos, and these days romance has space for different HEAs. It's all about the right HEA for those characters.

Syncopation by Anna Zabo has an aro lead who doesn't change identity. The HEA involves marriage "for financial reasons" so not the usual hearts and flowers, but it works for the characters. I think that as long as the characters are together in a partnership that makes sense to them, it is an HEA.

The prince in The Princess, Her Dragon, and Their Prince is transmasc. It's one of my top fantasy romance reads this year--great characterization and top-notch worldbuilding

Kingdom for Sale by Terry Brooks was such an interesting twist on this trope. The kingdom magically went into decline without a king, but all that really mattered was the king *caring* about the kingdom. Ben isn't "chosen" or a long lost heir, but he does intend to do the job for the long haul.

Taxing Courtship is my bronze age fantasy romance between a lady who moonlights as a thief and an adorkable cinnamon roll.

Exactly! It's a mess and streamlining/simplifying it for storytelling doesn't help at all. Broposal had great characters but terrible ICE info--so frustrating when it is a chance to educate, even if that makes the HEA more complicated...

I honestly believe the movie "Green Card" did actual damage to immigration discourse in the US because most USAians don't have a frame of reference for how immigration works, and mistakenly believe marrying a US citizen will somehow automatically grant a green card "like it does in the movies"

My dad bought me a copy of The Black Unicorn by Terry Brooks when he was on a business trip because he--correctly--thought I'd like the cover. It was way over my reading level (and had some questionable content) but struggling through it turned me into a life-long fantasy fan.
