Billboard just announced the Coachella 2025 lineup and guess whose mama is going to fly out to L.A. to check out the show? Huge congratulations to my daughter for being included in this impressive roster of artists.

With so many online mantras & reminders about our right to take up space, I thought I’d add that it’s also important to: cede space, share space, steward space, respect space & hold space for others. If you’re not also doing these five things, you aren’t building community, capacity or character.

I love a recessed balcony, especially when they’re clad in turquoise glazed tiles like this! Apartments in Tehran, Iran, by Firouz Firouz

It is absolutely wild how much misinformation is circulating online. I’m spending almost as much time researching & fact checking social media posts as I do in my professional practice and academic contexts. Any suggestions for quick verification of info before liking, or worse, sharing?

Thoughts Re: Governor Janet Mills Recent Resistance & Public Shaming Janet Mills reminds us about the courage it takes to resist in real time, in-person. While online resistance is relevant, it will never replace how we act & respond in public, without the shield of a device or large following.

An actual big moment would be these two women leaders recognizing that their actual opponent is Ford & delving into the healthcare, housing & public space crises we’re navigating under his “leadership.” But here we are witnessing the centre & left bicker for 2nd place rather than fight for first.

It currently takes 10.5 hours by train to travel from Quebec City to Toronto via Montreal. If Canada proceeds with a high-speed rail system, the trip would take only 4.5 hours. This project is a no-brainer.

I quite honestly cannot imagine anything worse than trying to encourage NYC’s workforce of ~9 million to all drive to work

Excellent point. Relatedly, several unhoused people die daily. Unhoused people who manage to survive daily indignities & struggles die 20+ years before people who are housed. However, housing injustice is rarely framed as deadly. As they say in the ‘hood, “the math ain’t mathin’.”

Gertrude Mossell (here c. 1890 with her daughters) was a journalist, educator, & activist. Her great grandfather, Cyrus Bustill, who served with Washington’s troops during the American Revolution, was an entrepreneur who helped found Philadelphia’s Free African Society.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

Huge turnout to protest the abuses of the Trump administration and save the civil service in downtown Seattle. Thousands in attendance.

A good, workhorse building we should build more of: Either 12 units for singles or 6 family-sized units. Everyone gets a balcony. Easily fits on a standard 5,000 square-foot lot. Fits around six parking spaces in the back. And yet, illegal to build in the typical US residential neighborhood.

These are Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne Division soldiers escorting the Little Rock Nine in 1957. Fort Campbell is erasing *its own* history.

Why are we literally firing national park rangers?! The National Park Service is an agency and national amenity with one of the highest approval ratings!

Sheryl Crow: “My parents always said you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla. Money donated to NPR, which is under threat by President Musk, in hopes the truth will…find its way to those willing to know [it].”

“America First” should mean that every American has housing.

Bernie Sanders: "They will use the enormous media operations they own to deflect attention away from the impact of their policies while they entertain us to death."

Talk about it. 👏🏾

My @thestar.com column: Council’s “Buy Local” enthusiasm rings a bit hollow considering two months ago they were voting to keep corner stores illegal. It’s a mixed message: buy local, but not TOO local. The city needs more than slogans. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Having worked with a group from Appalachia, I definitely agree with you and have a bit of context about how poor, white rural communities are being manipulated in this moment & historically. I’ve always said that we need to do a better job concurrently considering class, race & place.

Received these beautiful little buttons via snail mail from Winnipeg. Indigenous artist & mobility equity advocate, Christine Brouzes handmakes little clay buttons to raise awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, mental health & 2SLGBT+ folks — important public space considerations.

Pulitzer Prize winning rapper, Kendrick Lamar, made one of the most powerful placemaking statements in response to this political moment & almost zero response from urbanists? There are so many rich & relevant convos (& expressions) beyond conventional urbanism required to meet this fraught moment.

A lot of y’all fellow Canadians will hate this but need to hear this: Patriotism ignited by having a shared enemy isn’t an ideal form of patriotism. This wave of Canadian “love” & “pride” won’t translate to voting polls unless we reestablish fundamental shared values & address our existing issues.

I just lost my job, along with most of my coworkers, due to the illegal grant freeze. I worked at an organization that -helped veterans who have lost a limb -Assisted elderly and disabled people -Helped hospitals better treat people who have lost limbs

While 68% of West Palm Beach streets offer a low-stress cycling environment, they are often cut off from each other by high-stress intersections. Its 2025 Bicycle Master Plan aims to connect these 398 “islands” of low-stress bikeways, to provide seamless connectivity across the entire road network.

They’ve called armed federal officers to the scene. We aren’t dangerous. We are here to represent our people. To defend public education. This is an authoritarian regime. You cannot block members of Congress from entering the Department of Education.

Clear-eyed, direct NYT op-ed by @jamellebouie.net using the kind of non-euphemistic language the headlines should embrace:
