Seattle's new social housing tax on businesses won by 26% in the February election. Here's what comes next for the Seattle Social Housing Developer, the city tax office, opponents of the tax and the social housing advocates behind the electoral victory. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

"Pike Place Market Foundation executive director Lillian Sherman will resign effective March 7. The announcement comes after the nonprofit was hit with a wave of public outcry when it canceled a Day of Remembrance event planned at the market this month."

I know this is false spring and the rains will be back soon. But man 62 and sunny is good for the soul.

📢 BREAKING: Our unit has officially delivered a strike pledge to @cascadepbsnewsroom.bsky.social leadership in response to their most recent unfair proposal. After 8 months of stalled bargaining, they’re still refusing fair wages and benefits. We’re not backing down.

Rep. Jayapal speaking to a big crowd of UW workers protesting Trump’s attempt to cut medical research funding “Hands off our healthcare, hands off our research, hands off our jobs!”

President Trump identified state & local law enforcement as pivotal to mass deportations. But how it will play out is unclear, especially in “sanctuary states” that prohibit such collaborations. Cascade PBS & @investigatewest.bsky.social surveyed Washington county sheriffs to hear where they stand.

As the Seattle City Council debates the once-a-decade update to the city’s Comprehensive Plan, some disability rights advocates see an opportunity to make much more of the city accessible for people with disabilities, as well as for elderly residents and anyone else with limited mobility.

Much of Harrell's State of the City speech this morning focused on plans for 2025. I wrote about a few of the big idea's he proposed during today's address. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

Harrell makes the case for his proposed comprehensive plan update as neighborhood groups call for scaling back zoning changes and some Councilmembers cast doubts on the plan. “For Seattle to continue to rise, our neighborhoods can’t stay stagnant”

Harrell announces creation of a new Office of Waterfront, Civic Projects & Sound Transit with a 50 person staff to help speed up delivery of West Seattle to Ballard light rail expansion. Will work on city permitting piece and station area planning. Says it could cut a year off project time.

The mayor’s annual state of the city address is being held at Benaroya Hall. We’re opening with a little Michael Jackson from the Garfield High band.

New @cascadepbsnewsroom.bsky.social: For disability rights advocates, Seattle's comp plan is seen as a chance to improve accessibility in the city because it will allow more apartments in more neighborhoods. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

NEW: House Bill 1635, sponsored by state Rep. Cindy Ryu, would require any Washington-based co-op with more than 2,500 employees to reserve two seats on its board of directors for workers.

Prop 1A's lead continues to grow and is now up to 24.6% over 1B. Only about 19,000 ballots left to count, according to the Secretary of State's site. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

With another 19,600 ballots counted, Prop 1A, the new social housing tax, has extended its lead over 1B by another half a percent. 1A leads 58% to 42%. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

In case you missed it, Prop 1A to fund social housing with a new tax on Seattle businesses is leading by 15 points after the first ballot count last night. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

New @cascadepbsnewsroom.bsky.social, after the first round of counting Tuesday, Seattle voters are poised to pass a new tax on businesses to fund the Seattle Social Housing Developer. The two school levy renewals are also passing by huge margins. www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

After the first round of ballot counting, Prop 1A leads Prop 1B 57.5% to 42.5% in Seattle's special election to determine how to fund Seattle's new social housing developer.

New: the AP says it was blocked from an Oval Office event after being informed that it would be barred if it didn’t follow President Trump’s guidance on renaming the Gulf of Mexico

It's election day! Seattle voters have til 8pm to get ballots turned in to a drop box to decide if/how to fund social housing and renewal of two school levies. Turnout is currently 20%. KC Elections expects that to reach about 33% in total. More on Props 1A & 1B: www.cascadepbs.org/politics/202...

Philly friends reporting in.

It’s time

New @cascadepbsnewsroom.bsky.social, Seattle businesses including Microsoft & Amazon have spent more than $500K to oppose a new tax to fund social housing that's going before voters on Feb. 11. A new poll found voters are nearly evenly split between Prop 1A & 1B www.cascadepbs.org/briefs/2025/...

This shows that "doxxing" has become a meaningless, catch-all phrase for anything these guys do not like reported. @klong.bsky.social is an impressive reporter, who simply connected the anonymous postings of a self-declared racist to the public identity of someone directly altering government.

This is not a U.S. Marshal, Federal Protective Service, or any other federal law enforcement officer. This is a private security guard from Triple Canopy. He has no authority to block members of Congress who have oversight of the EPA from entering the building.

We're five days out from the Feb 11 special election and turnout is currently just 13.5%. That will rise as we get closer to Tuesday, but suggests this, like most Feb special elections, will be pretty low turnout. Today I learned you can't resole a pair of Blundstones, which is tough news for 98% of journalists in Seattle. The soles on my pair cracked so I took them to a cobbler to get them repaired. Found out something about the way the soles are glued on means most cobblers can't/won't do Blundstones.

An hour til people can start signing up to make public comment and 2.5 hours til the Council’s public hearing on the comp plan begins and there’s already folks camped out at city hall. It’s gonna be a longggggg meeting.
