The key issue with putting contrarians in power is that their platform is entirely based on arguing against the mainstream. Mainstream public health makes mistakes, but on the aggregate it's pretty solid and evidence-based. If you throw out everything mainstream, you're left with a lot of nonsense.

The chances that a viral health trend is at least two of: 1. Ineffective 2. Harmful 3. Expensive Is close to 100%. The worst reason to do something for your health is that it's briefly popular on Instagram/Tiktok.

As outras estações que me perdoem, mas o outono é fundamental

I have no interest in defending Prasad, but I think it's worth noting that the U.S.'s position on childhood immunization against COVID-19 is out of step with international guidelines. In Australia, children under 18 are only eligible for COVID-19 vaccines if they are seriously immunocompromised.

Cool new paper from colleagues showing that diabetes rates are a substantial underestimate in Australia and we're probably missing at least 30% of cases (if not more). www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

My latest on Medscape covers a recently published study that both traditional media and social media reported as being proof that Splenda increases hunger (and of course as a consequence, increases weight). Sounds scary. Unless you actually read the paper 🧵

Como de hábito, é tudo hype

If you're keeping track of the long list of things this admin's done that flies in the face of MAHA, censoring and ultimately losing the top intramural nutrition scientist studying food processing and health is definitely towards the top.

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology.

The first randomized trial comparing fecal occult blood testing (every other year) testing and (one-time) colonoscopy. No significant difference in colon cancer mortality among >56,000 participants www.thelancet.com/journals/lan... @thelancet.bsky.social

To be crystal clear: 1. Measles is a nasty disease 2. You cannot treat measles with antibiotics or cod liver oil 3. The measles vaccine is very safe and highly effective, as shown by the ELIMINATION OF THE DISEASE IN THE US FOR 25 YEARS 4. RFK Jr. is an ignorant fool

If you've followed me for any length of time you know I'm something of a Vitamin D supplementation skeptic. Well... like any good skeptic, sometimes you have to re-examine your priors. Priors updated: there may be a role for vitamin d supplementation in MS. (Thread)

The DOGE boys don't know the difference between transgender and transgenic If you are on a witch hunt, you'd better know the difference between a broomstick and a wand. If the didn't have power, these clowns would be entertaining. #science www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Do diets cause eating disorders? I've seen the claim made many times online, so I looked into it. Surprisingly, best evidence seems to show that if anything, diets REDUCE the risk of eating disorders. My new piece gidmk.substack.com/p/do-diets-c...

In what is one of the more disturbing studies I've read recently, a @NatureMedicine paper shows that, by the time we die, we have about a sandwich bag worth of microplastics in our brain. In fact, the brain seems to be a reservoir for the stuff. (Thread)

Medical error is not the "third leading cause of death". This is a lie based on a truly woeful paper. I've unlocked the piece because apparently this disinformation is now being shared by RFK Jr. and the US federal government. Feel free to share! gidmk.substack.com/p/medical-er...

“Infants may consume upwards of 60 grams of added sugars per day, or the equivalent of two soft drinks per day if they are entirely formula-fed,” researchers say in the study, published yesterday [Feb. 24, 2025] in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis. usrtk.org/healthwire/i...

This has to be the biggest misrepresentation of scientific results I've seen so far this year. Headlines: yoghurt may reduce your risk of cancer! Study: NOT THAT AT ALL 1/n

NIH has announced a cut in the "indirect rate" to 15% across the board, in a move that appears to be retroactive to even existing grants. This is a bloodbath for research institutions throughout the country. Brief explainer for those not in this world: https://buff.ly/3EtML7D

It is so bizarre that people believe that COVID-19 vaccines didn't prevent infection. We have gold-standard clinical trial evidence proving that they do!

This is a ridiculous story even by the standards I use to measure these things. Headlines are proclaiming that sparkling water may be useful for weight loss. The study this is based on is a completely speculative hypothesis that makes no sense. 1/n
