My Bible study group will study 1 Thessalonians 1 tomorrow. Naturally, we will spend considerable time talking about eschatological punishment.

It's where we are, folks.

Good morning. “The cross is the event in which God makes all human suffering his own . . . The cross is seen first and foremost as revelatory; it is the most intimate example of God’s self-communication, and it is how we can learn the most about his character and being." 1/2

In the space of one week, the Trump administration has claimed that: - attack plans of an air strike are *not* state secrets - the details of the kidnapping and rendition of some 300 people to a private prison in El Salvador without due process absolutely *are* state secrets Think about that.

How you treat immigrants is how you treat Jesus Christ.

Howard Thurman offers instructions for practicing stillness and silent meditation: "We must find sources of strength and renewal for our own spirits, lest we perish." We invite you to read on. #DailyMeditations tinyurl.com/mvc8zfk8

I caused a small ruckus on some of my social media yesterday with my post about hell and God's wrath related to the gospel. This needs more than a handful of characters to deal with, so I've written a fuller blog post. Be kind to each other out there! michaelpahl.com/2025/03/26/h...

Persecuting immigrants, refugees, and LGBTQ+ does not make you a hero. It only makes you cruel and inhuman.

My first ever book review was published today by The Englewood Review of Books. How about that? The Tears of Things (Featured Review)

Abolish ICE. What they are doing is evil.

I think reading the psalms is the most important devotional habit I must maintain.

I must shave tonight before I shower. But I think I ran out of blades 🫠

Since the daily office lectionary has Jeremiah skipping between chapters I’ve been reading what gets dropped in between. And this one got me today with, the neverending tidal wave of news and all ⚓️

If the gospel is that Jesus died to appease God's wrath against us because of our sin so that we can go to heaven and not to hell, why doesn't any description of "gospel" in the NT say that? Why don't any of the gospel proclamations in Acts say that? Simple answer: because that's not the gospel.

I went to the doctor today. Yes, my wife made me do it. It went fine 😅🤣

❤️much about the Orthodox Church. I was completely crestfallen to read this. Such praise makes certain evangelical groups look almost saintly. 😭 Pope had a completely different take on events. This makes one question their assessment of Constantine. www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/white-h...

See, I am doing a new thing. 📊 I am hoping to put out a series of posts to retrieve folks' opinions on what's the best translation of any given author or text, primarily those from (late) antiquity. Please repost widely, and do reply with your sincerest, and/or lighthearted opinions.

“Mindfulness:” The spirituality of capitalism wherein you cannot change the terrors you face, you can only try and manage the feelings they produce.

Our Bible study group will spend the next three Fridays on 2 Thessalonians, and will then complete our third Bible book study.

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Can’t wait to eat dinner 🤤

Thinking about today's Gospel reading, and thinking about how Pope Francis's loudest objectors seem to be within the church. Truly, a prophet is not welcome in his own native land.

so many seismically disturbing details in the atlantic story—so this is just a sidecar horror

Part 1 on neighbors being disappeared by the US government.

The whole point is not just the state disappearing whoever they want, it's you being in the habit of accepting the state choosing whom to disappear, without question. It's submission to the state. Same as with Gitmo after 9/11. The state's judgment must not be questioned.

Transforming grace is God’s punishment for sinners. It is not the right choose that defines the reality of human freedom. It is the doing of the good. —Jürgen #Moltmann
