Just this guy, you know? Currently writing a game in UE5 about an AI wiping out humanity, but doing so using brand-friendly, HR-approved language.

The Last Gig, a stealth FPS / immersive sim where you must put on humanity's last ever rock concert during an AI apocalypse: store.steampowered.com/app/3680580/...

I did something very similar in Shadertoy a while back! Everyone loves a hypnotic spiral

Spline-based escalators were a very quick win- the hardest bit was getting the handrest speed to match the steps.
In the full game there will be chewing gum stuck to the sides, and perhaps to the player's boots. Wishlist 'The Last Gig' today! tinyurl.com/5t2dd6cd

This giant chandelier thing is just straight PCG- a bunch of spheres and boxes- and the 'fountain' is just a sphere from Scythe with some glitter. Corporate art is very, very easy. I'd add physics, but I need to focus on getting the robots in, and building the supermarket 2/3 #ue5 #gamedev

Well exactly- it's great that it takes care of so much but it does railroad you a bit. I'm sure hacks like this are all over the place... or maybe I've just missed something obvious. But it works so I'm not touching it!

So then I did what I really didn't want to do- make a chain of hard physics constraints on the fly. Bit fiddly to set up, but when everything is in the right place and forces transferred it works great. Moral of the story: stupid is fine if you can't see it. 3/3 #gamedev #screenshotsaturday #ue5

So I had to find a way to switch to a different movement system and back. Mover wanted async physics which broke half the game; a single physics constraint had to be 'soft' and tended to explode; the cable component sort of worked, but was all over the place while the vertlets warmed up 2/3

Nah you'll be fine, I reckon you've already done one hard bit- just the buildings and you're there! You may find this useful though if you've not read it- martindevans.me/game-develop...

Too kind! Obviously I now only see what's wrong with it but that's just how it goes. What's this written in?

I suspect yours will scale a lot better

Top stuff, it looks great! This is a lot neater than my procedural London, but then London isn't a grid and I didn't want "blocks"- I started with the roads to create broad districts, then carved them up with a few different strategies to make them more interesting.

Very slick. Is this using the 'tensor' / vector flow field approach?

All the Roll 7 games were fabulous, and Rollerdrome in particular was stellar! Really sad when they shut you guys down.

God imagine the tasteless crap Trump would want on his lightsabre hilt- all rococo gold inlays.
I bet if he tried to build a Deathstar it'd get stuck in the design phase- it's spherical, so lacks an obvious top floor, meaning he'd never like any of the suggestions for where to put his office.

I wrote my own 'engine' on top of OpenFrameworks for the screensavers I made during lockdown (store.steampowered.com/app/1631280/...) which gave me the experience to say: no, never again. I think it's something everyone has to try once, but man it's a lot of work I'd rather not do

I also discovered this recently! I was half way through working out a control rig system to stop the bloody weapon going into walls and then noticed the option. It does mess with some other things like scene capture components though, but if you don't have a selfie gun you should be ok...

Go for it! Basically if you can get a road layout enclosing some regions, you can use PCGEx's to find the regions, and then go from there... although then you'll also have to work out all the other bits, but it's a starting point

Thanks mate, means a lot (both of those!) - be sure to join the PCGEx discord if you're diving in, it can be very intimidating to start with, but there's lots of helpful people there

And finally, 'The Last Gig' now has a Steam page! store.steampowered.com/app/3680580/...
...no trailer, but I needed *something* online before the presentation. Please wishlist and / or look for spelling mistakes.

And... I went on Inside Unreal to talk about PCGEx and PCG in #ue5! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwF7...
Still amazed that I had the opportunity, and also that I found myself explaining object pivots using a 5A drumstick and Sartre's 'Existentialism & Humanism'.

I also needed a break from coding after doing that Inside Unreal presentation, so I rebuilt the HQ of the murderbots to be more interesting than "ominous cylinder". It's over 1km high so *perhaps* a bit big- but I like the shape, and it's got drone ports I need 2/4 #screenshotsaturday #blender

(3/3) There's also an observation deck / chill out zone where you can have a cup of coffee and a smoke and wonder about how much the flats cost, and how to get out. Join me and @nebukam.bsky.social to find out more on the 1st! Hopefully nothing will crash #ue5 #screenshotsaturday #london #gamedev

(2/3) The nice thing about it being procedural is that if you've ever wanted 200 floors of the #London Barbican centre, you can now have it. The walkways are totally wrong but I need them for testing the grappling hook. #gamedev #screenshot

"Vibe coding" is not a positive term. I assume that the monkey is AI generated- did you get Chat GPT to write the article for you as well?

That *could* be because I got a deal on the 'Boom Basics' library of sound effects from www.boomlibrary.com and they list Valve as a client, so it could be that I'm using Gordon's crowbar sounds for the robot feet...
Remind me to do an analysis of lift shitness to metacritic score in games.

Much better! One small bit of feedback though- I've no idea if the paid version is a one-off cost or a subscription thing. I'm tempted, but I'm also on a pretty tight budget...

This is a fantastic thing you're doing... but unfortunately the 'premium' pop-up takes up the whole screen on Chrome iOS, and doesn't get scrolling focus when it does it, so I can't even buy my way in!

3. THEN MAKE THEM TOTALLY UNABLE TO DO THE THINGS THAT A HUMAN IS REQUIRED FOR HERE SUCH AS HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR OR TASTE OR ANY SORT OF THOUGHT AT ALL

Here I'm not.
Can we please consider the irony here:
1. Build #tech so they don't have to pay actual people
2. Present a #cute version to those same people as a sort of fluffy #PR handjob

Whatever I tried, this utterly miserable waste of #compute I could not do better than 'disgruntled train guard'.
Question: who is this for? Why do I need images of my friends that are "just sort of OK but not really what I asked for"?
I have a dim view of #ai in general, but...

Well now they have, and #Apple don't want people doing this kind of thing, but to my mind they've made it *worse*.
My first attempt gave me "Hitler after his #cardio, drinking his #chai, and getting ready for the daily stand-up ReichStag Technologies". 4/n

As time went on the apps got better- here's Hitler being the #SpiceGirls.
The apps would just do it; they had no guard-rails against this kind of puerile nonsense, and hardly anyone had read #Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom, or heard of @esyudcowsky.bsky.social , or #alignment etc 3/n

When this #GenAI crap started all those years ago, shops still had magazines, but the only people left reading them were old- so, they were all about either #sudoku, #knitting, #gardening or #war . This was in a supermarket after I downloaded 'FaceApp', so obviously I tried it on it.
