And now the first measles death in TX outbreak. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

A lot of rich people don't want to admit that a big part of the United States' success in innovation is thanks to government funding & research, and maybe not purely because of their genius-level IQs & unique business acumen.

The Trump's response to the current measles and bird flu outbreaks remind me of a very common training technique. First you run through things in a real time/realistic scenario. Then you do it again at slow speed to teach the proper way. I'm not optimistic. www.cdc.gov/media/releas...

We're the farmers who eat their seed corn.

What , no checks and balances? I guess we do have a king.

I'm really getting tired of all these walk backs. I've lead large-scale change efforts at multiple top 10 Pharma. The first rule was, unless it involves safety, have a solution in place before you dismantle anything.

Great post about why science funding matters. This funding has impacted the early careers and even just the idea of a career in science of virtually every American scientist living today. We need more American's in STEM. Right now we're farmers eating our seed corn.

We're eating the seed corn rather than planting the next crop.

📣 DC friends - please consider supporting this rally on Wednesday, February 19th!

Here's the latest update from @dereklowe.bsky.social One point he makes is around the impact that the in limbo review committee meetings have on the reviewers. When I was a regular on review panels, I would allocate ~ 3 weeks for both meeting prep and the meeting itself. Reviewers are volunteers.

Yet more proof that curmudgeons can add value. Especially since I'm now one of them. Also proof that the government IT systems do need those funds allocated for updates.

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

Depending on your perspective it's a good/bad week for @science.org's news team to launch our Trump Tracker. Were recent NIH resignations voluntary? Will RFK Jr start firing scientists today? Why did a judge unfreeze U.S. foreign aid needed for clinical trials? www.science.org/content/arti...

You should ask yourself why the GOP wants to impeach judges who rule against them but not Clarence Thomas, who failed to report millions of dollars in bribes, erm, “gifts” on his financial disclosures.

Want to help pay for federally funded research and lower the price of drugs in the US. Index the Pharma R&D tax exemptions to the relative costs of their drugs in the rest of the G7. I'm saying this as a scientist who spent over 30 years as a biomedical researcher in Pharma.

Great editorial from Nobel Laureate and former head of the NIH. Federal funding of science has enriched the US economy since the 1940's and it's not just medicine. There have been countless advances in agriculture, food science, chemical manufacturing, electronics.

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

Thousands of investors in Trump’s crypto scheme lost $2 billion in just weeks while the Trump Organization racked up $100 million in trading fees. Just so happens that the CFPB, which Trump is trying to kill, recently announced new regulations for the crypto industry. Hello?

Well said @dereklowe.bsky.social. Academia produces two vital products: (1) knowledge, and (2) human capital that knows how to use it. If we can’t train enough young creative US scientists to fulfill biopharma industry needs… “I think they're being short-sighted, because fear does that to you.”

Excellent article on the impact of the NIH cuts to indirect costs to research institutions. This will likely hit red states harder than blue. Texas, Florida, and Tennessee collectively received $3.6 billion last year. /1

Here’s my post on the NIH indirect costs slash-and-burn. God, these people are exhausting:

Five ex-Treasury Secretaries write for @NYTimes.com: "Our Democracy Is Under Siege" "During our collective 18 years at the helm of the Treasury, we never were asked to stop congressionally appropriated funds from being paid out in full." Op-ed:

This is alarming. While a few of the authors are government employees, the majority of the authors are not. While I'm not involved with this work. I have been a part of a collaborative effort with the NIH to publish best practices in biomedical research for over 20 years. /1

I like it!

Think firing the entire federal workforce will save America money? Federal civilian employees account for just 4% of the federal budget. Even if someone like Musk—or any president—fired all of us, it wouldn’t make much of a dent in government spending. Don’t fall for it.

Trade is not a zero sum game. Most of the US GDP comes from high value goods and services. The iPhone. Designed in America. Made in China. This shows up as a trade deficit, because the production is in other countries, but most of the profit ends up in the US. /1

A bit of professional disappointment that Wired beat me to it. But glad the info is out. I can confirm the key details of this report based on my own reporting -the name of the DOGE operative and that yes the reports about read only access is categorically false. Not only does Marko have full …
