I don't feel like people are focusing on him enough in public protests etc either

Important update about local impacts of funding cuts. Depressing but compelling... Thanks to @joshuasweitz.bsky.social and his team for putting this together. scienceimpacts.org

Why a Vaccine Expert Left the C.D.C.: ‘Americans Are Going to Die’ Dr. Fiona Havers is influential among researchers who study immunizations. The wholesale dismissal of the agency’s scientific advisers crossed the line, she said. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/18/h... #GiftLink

Pro tip, folks: if you make a figure for a publication, don’t just hand the copyright over to the publisher. Post it on OSF first and then give yourself permission to use it in the first publication and then all future publications. That way, no permissions issues.

If you weren't angry enough already, here are the rates of non-competitive renewals through May. 4008 Non-competitive renewals were due to be funded in May. The total funded was 99! Some is due to terminations, but most is due to slow grant making due to DOGE review and other impediments. 1/2

Marine veterans are speaking out against the troop deployment in Los Angeles. Across the country, they’re taking down their American flags that have flown in front of their homes for years. Remember, we have friends everywhere.

"We are speaking on behalf of hundreds of NIH staff who are standing up together to say: WE DISSENT. I am so scared about doing this but I am trying to be brave for my kids because it's only gonna get harder to speak up." Thank you to Dr. Jenna Norton and NIH scientists for your courage!

Please read this and share widely, especially with people outside of science. Things are BAD in American bioscience right now and everyone needs to know just how bad - and dangerous - it is. apnews.com/article/nih-...

Two babies have died from whooping cough in Kentucky. Neither they nor their parents had been vaccinated. The current whooping cough outbreak in the U.S. hasn’t grabbed the media spotlight as much as measles has, but it’s important to update your vaccination if you’re going to be around babies.

The global virus network @globalvirusnews.bsky.social has put out an excellent summary on the new #COVID19 strain NB.1.8.1 and vaccine protection. I am linking the press release but also summarizing the key points in a 🧵 below: gvn.org/global-virus...

Episode 3 of Science Amplified is up now! I talk to Dr. Rachel Marsh about her pioneering research on mother-baby outcomes from prenatal covid exposure and the consequences of terminating her funding for that project. Please share and give us a rating! open.spotify.com/episode/0rCp...

ATTENTION: I am working on a project and need some assistance. If anyone might have some time this weekend, particularly if you are in a red state, please DM me (and provide an email address and/or cell number) or reach me on Signal (jeremymberg.78). THANK YOU!

In 5 years, long covid has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness among children in the US. The only way to avoid long covid is to avoid catching covid. Masks lower your instance of illness. These are facts. Cognitive dissonance & denial are kicking people’s ass.

There’s something uniquely upsetting about seeing an A1 grant score that is worse than the score on the first submission… 😩😮‍💨

We have allowed a multi system vascular virus to spread unchecked for nearly 6 years. Public health has failed to advise folks of the risk to long term health, or of the fact that there’s no such thing as “mild” COVID. Yet doctors blame sudden rise in young stroke patients on everything BUT Covid

RFK Jr. is absolutely poisonous. He has now caused Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos, the person in charge of COVID19 vaccinations at the CDC, to resign. She did so because RFK Jr. demanded that the experts in charge of vaccine guidance listen to him and not to the scientific evidence.

Please, Karma, please! 🙏

Law enforcement officers should never cover their faces when making arrests or conceal their identities (unless they are working undercover). They work for us. We have a right to know who they are. These face coverings are frightening & unAmerican, as though they're ashamed of what they're doing.

In Missouri, overturning the will of voters has almost become the legislature’s main business. Lawmakers wasted no time moving to undo a constitutional amendment that legalized abortion up to fetal viability. By @jeremykohler.bsky.social‬

CDC now says all kids "may receive" COVID vaccines. This means insurance companies will likely still cover the shots. BUT the new guidance is more confusing than a broad recommendation, and COVID vaccines during pregnancy are now listed as "No Guidance/Not Applicable," which will decrease uptake.

GOP Sen. Joni Ernst responds to voters saying that cutting Medicaid will kill them: “Well, we all are going to die.”

The New York Times has found at least two more fake citations in the MAHA report. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/w...

Glad to see this, but I have another idea...Hear me out here... Why doesn't NIH just reinstate the effing awards since they are ongoing and already made it successfully through a competitive process? Seems like this would actually be "efficient" (and also fair and just)...

Scientists need to adapt to a changed world. We must learn to communicate with the public. Our *Institutions* should prioritize and reward public engagement efforts. @bcmhouston.bsky.social

When we communicate science, we often don't say where the resources for it come from. This is clearly a mistake: people consuming science should know who is funding it--and if that funding is being taken away. So, I decided to document the funding sources of every scientist mentioned in my book.

Back of the envelope calculation for NIH funds cut in FY 2025 Funds cut due to terminations and slow noncompetitive renewal/grant awards: $8.6 B. 15% cut of research management and support ($2.48B), Intramural research ($5.18 B), and R&D Contracts ($3.91 B). $1.8 B. TOTAL CUT: $10.4 Billion

What do we know about the new coronavirus NB.1.8.1 strain. "A new highly contagious variant of the coronavirus is being linked to large surges of cases throughout Asia, and now it’s hit the US. Here is everything you need to know about it." Source: archive.md/D6Nup

India reports 1,000+ active COVID cases and 7 deaths in the past week. New subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 found; NB.1.8.1 may spread faster due to stronger binding to human cells, says India’s SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

Christian Nationalists pretend that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, but the Constitution never mentions Jesus or Christianity. Not even once. Instead, it bans government promotion of *any* religion. Don't be fooled by their lying propaganda.

The new 'razor blade throat' Covid variant is causing an increase in hospitalizations across Asia France reported a 19% positivity rate on tests The US has detected it in a number of major cities What's being done? They're taking away boosters. No free tests or paid time off Wear a respirator.

Plenty of folks in neuro who should take a cold hard look at what they have (likely unknowingly) built a narrative for.

All of NIH funding to Northwestern University is frozen. This pause includes noncompeting approved funding, new and competing grants with fundable scores. No reimbursements for money already spent have been received since March. This situation is rarely reported so please Please get the word out!

“Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator” So much to unpack here. (Also, the Trump administration doesn’t care about regular ol’ Americans. Only the super rich ones.)

Saying that the US should let other countries take their turns at being the global leader in biomedical research really makes no sense at all. Sure. While we’re at it, let’s also stop being leaders in terms of economic influence and military might. Kudos to @jeremymberg.bsky.social’s quick reply

Why we should care about the measles outbreaks: -In wealthy countries, 0.1%-0.2% of measles cases result in death -In poorer countries or populations, up to 10% of cases will die -15-30% of measles cases will require hospitalization Thread [1/8]
