I think our descent was on the cardinal's mind and at least the world sees an American who embodies good rather than evil. That said, it's still Catholicism and patriarchy still rules, so we work with what we have. His tweets of this year seem to indicate someone who discerns the moment.

At first I thought, "Not an American, we can't be trusted with anything now," but the more I'm learning the better I'm feeling about this choice. American who embodies good in the world to offset the evil we're bringing it. A mysterious place indeed.
