Trump threatens to put American citizens on deportation flights to a slave prison in El Salvador

Senator Lisa Murkowski says her Republican colleagues are ‘afraid’ of Trump and Musk: “That’s why you’ve got everybody just like, zip lip, not saying a word because they’re afraid they’re going to be taken down. They’re going to be primaried.”

It's going to be difficult to formally corroborate instances like this for reasons that are, I think, pretty self-evident...but I am certainly hearing rapidly increasing concern from international colleagues regarding physical travel to the United States (for multiple reasons).

Momentum representatives @ the Hungarian Parliament👇 Orban & co. have just *banned* Budapest Pride 🏳️‍🌈 threatening to fine participants 500€ In 2025. In an EU country. They’re NOT getting away with this. We’ll be there anyway & you should too #SeeYouAtBudapestPride euobserver.com/eu-political...

1. EXCLUSIVE An internal Social Security Administration memo, dated March 13 and obtained by Popular Information, lays out a plan to sabotage the agency. The memo itself predicts "service disruption," "operational strain," and "budget shortfalls" will result. Follow this thread for details. 🧵

I have lived in authoritarianism before, and participated in a popular movement against it. My political voice was born in it. I was just talking to a friend - this moment is *triggering* because it feels like so few people are reacting on the magnitude of what I know is coming.

I had not heard of this book but now I am going to read it tonight.

My wife is in her first year teaching K-8 art after teaching 1st and 2nd grade. She loves it and is good at it. And yet, we are suddenly terrified the Trump administration, in eviscerating the Dept. of Education, will put her out of work.

Just so we’re all following 1) Elon spends ~$300M to elect Trump 2) Trump gives him the federal government 3) Elon guts the agencies that regulate his companies 4) Trump holds an infomercial for Elon’s cars on the White House lawn 5) Elon gives Trump another $100M

#ScienceDiplomacy is dead. It never actually delivered diplomatic dividends. Can the EU's industry around it survive? www.nature.com/articles/d41...

My latest post is now out. I show how Trump's attacks on science and universities are neither random nor new - they fit very precisely into the authoritarian playbook. This means we can guess what might come next and prepare - and we must! christinapagel.substack.com/p/censor-pur...

It was great to see today all the courageous and inspiring people (several awesome students among them) who are ready to fight for science, for democracy, for equality #standupforscience #Austin

French Senator Claude Malhuret: "Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."

Evidently, the leader of the free world now is Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats. After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

In 1997, Hungary was the first country in the former Eastern Bloc where a Pride march was held, marking the country's pioneering role in LGBTQ+ rights. Now, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wants Hungary to be the first EU country to ban Pride in public. Read more here: www.politico.eu/article/hung...

Often, working on my book about the last 25 years, writing the parts reviewing how systematically and arrogantly agenda-setting elite political journalists took the side of the most harmful forces in American life, I get overwhelmed with grief, and just have to take a day. This is one of those days.

In early Jan, I submitted an abstract to an ICA pre-conference: "Jenga Politics: The Strategic Weaponization of Distrust." I worried that the organizers would think that I was batshit crazy. A lot has happened since. Now this abstract feels *way* too on the nose. Why can't I predict happy futures?

Why is this US administration so bent on owning the #Arctic? Expensive oil? Deep sea mining? Security? www.politico.eu/article/russ...

I've been studying Turkey for... more than thirty years. I'm so gobsmacked by the process going on right now that I am not sure I could write three coherent paragraphs about it.
