This is scary / hilarious. I feel the tag for this piece needs more clarity, like: "Fiction (for now)"

Just had a great experience participating in a very well-run conference (thank you @indiejournalists.bsky.social!), and so in my latest newsletter I share a few helpful things I was reminded of by taking part in this event, knowing that conferences are a big part of the writer/author experience.

Great podcast interview!

Latest Book Publishing newsletter discusses how the pub date anchors a campaign calendar. This includes a non-existing, or unscheduled, pub date! bookpublishing.substack.com/p/pub-date-a...

Congratulations Ian. This whole project sounds amazing.

The major Winter Institute publishing conference just ended, but there's whole year’s worth of trade shows, conferences & festivals ahead of us. My latest newsletter delves into the importance of strategic calendaring as it relates to your pub date (whether that date is set or still a dream to be).

This is the longest we've kept a secret project secret: SLP is proud to be the home for HIT REPEAT UNTIL I HATE MUSIC: THE MARCH XNESS ANTHOLOGY, collated by the Official @marchxness.bsky.social Selection Committee (@angermonsoon.bsky.social + @meganc.bsky.social) and forthcoming on 3/31/26!

Free subs are open right now @okaydonkey.bsky.social!

Great story. Thanks for putting this festival on my radar. Gotta get to Houston for this. cc @juhuthukral.bsky.social

The @indiejournalists.bsky.social virtual conference has been absolutely fantastic. So much networking, and invaluable insights & resources shared. Very inspired by today's Editors Panel feat. Deborah Jian Lee, @latams.bsky.social & Amy McKeever, moderated by Erika Hayasaki.

"Take the pieces that you can't sell and publish them yourself...find ways to get your voice out there beyond the places that you're pitching." - @saribotton.bsky.social #IIJ2025

"I am a big believer in literary citizenship." - @saribotton.bsky.social #IIJ2025

Day 2 of #TheIIJ #IIJ2025 conference by @indiejournalists.bsky.social is off to a strong start. It's so great to hear from #freelance #journalists who are #encouraging and building up a #community, rather than tearing down one another, scrambling to compete and stepping over others.

Great conversation with Gina Chua, keynote speaker for the second day of the @indiejournalists.bsky.social conference with John J. Edwards III moderating the Q&A. #IIJ2025

Fantastic poetry reading @sarahlynwrites.bsky.social! Love this podcast reading series from @debutiful.bsky.social

Great write-up of Cynthia Weiner's novel A Gorgeous Excitement in The Maris Review, which has now migrated from Substack to the Ghost platform.

Calling science writers, visual science communicators, environmental educators. Here's an opportunity! Meet freelance journalists from across the globe, establish a presence in the field, and meet editors. I always learn so much at IIJ events. Hope to see you there. @indiejournalists.bsky.social

Celebrate the launch of @traceygee.bsky.social's new book The Magic of Knowing What You Want today (Sunday, Feb. 23) at 3 pm at @booksonb.bsky.social (in Hayward, CA). Full details here:

Thank you @okaydonkey.bsky.social! So thrilled to have my flash fiction included in this anthology, & very grateful that you published & nominated the story for "Best Small Fictions 2024." Congrats also to @avitusbcarle.bsky.social, @writesofkathryn.bsky.social & all the other writers in the book.

Great interview with @traceygee.bsky.social — thank you @booknotions.bsky.social for showcasing The Magic of Knowing What You Want!

Lots of conversation abt blurbs right now. I fall on the side of seeing value in blurbs, and convey the reasons why in my latest newsletter. But mainly I wanted to share practical information abt the blurb-ask effort — tips & insights to help make the endeavor run more smoothly. Read it here:

Great episode of @worstqualitycrab.bsky.social featuring @traceygee.bsky.social. Hosts Freesia and Sam talk turkey with Tracey about the deliciousness of Turkey Jook, as well as Tracey's new book, The Magic of Knowing What You Want. Listen here:

Excited to be a part of this panel, and looking forward to sharing doable tips and best practices for cultivating relationships and landing new clients/opportunities. If you are a freelance / independent journalist, be sure to check out the full (virtual) conference program, happening Feb 27-28.

Great interview with Cynthia Weiner about her debut novel A Gorgeous Excitement. Big thanks to Bianca of @booknotions.bsky.social for the showcase.

My latest newsletter shares some insights on the happenings at Winter Institute, one of the book publishing industry’s biggest annual conferences (coming up at the end of Feb). Of note is the expansive Galley Room, which is both daunting and inspiring. Read about it here:

And last day (1/31) for early bird registration to this great virtual conference for independent journalists. I'm looking forward to being on one of the marketing-focused panels. Learn more about all the other excellent programming and take advantage of the early bird pricing.

Last day (1/31) for early bird tickets to Open Secrets Live in NYC on May 3! This is going to be a fantastic event — get your ticket(s) now.

Congratulations to @traceygee.bsky.social on the publication of her inspiring new book, The Magic of Knowing What You Want. This is a thoughtful and extremely practical book that shares ideas and exercises to help you get to the heart of understanding what it is that you truly want to achieve.

My latest newsletter delves back into the publishing timeline series. A timeline provides a very useful framework, but it’s going to have a lot of caveats. A book campaign is, after all, chaotic by nature, subject to all manner of variables, good & bad. That’s the challenge, and the fun of it all.

Happy pub day to Cynthia Weiner! Wonderful to see Cynthia’s debut novel, A Gorgeous Excitement, officially out in the world (and here with me as I start my day with a hearty breakfast on this frigid NYC morning).
