One of the recommendations to avoid burnout is to find your role in the resistance. I have some experience with the federal grant process and the history of science (and what happens when politics interferes with science), so here are a few thoughts on the issue: www.facebook.com/share/p/155x...

At a conference in Munich, J. D. Vance said: "“But we want to achieve a durable, lasting peace." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/w...

The Trump administration has just destroyed the American economy. www.facebook.com/share/p/1e5L...

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, but cutting $1 trillion in government spending is likely to produce a recession. www.facebook.com/share/p/19w6...

Anyone remember "Dark Angel" (the James Cameron series with Jessica Alba)? Anyway, you might want to get paper copies of your social security earnings over the years: www.ssa.gov

So I know I have MAGAt "friends" and relatives on Facebook. They are very, very, very quiet right now, posting about the most innocuous things possible. It's tempting to reach out to them...but are they quiet because they're appalled, or are they quiet because they're happy?

Just a quick note to our international friends: Wine is mostly made in blue states (CA, NY). Distilled alcohol is mostly made in red states (KY, TN). You know what to do...

An old joke...

Real question: The threats to companies that have DEI policies makes me wonder what exactly could DOJ do to such companies? The current standard of proof for discrimination cases is very high, so prosecuting a company for discriminating against a white person would seem impossible?

In anticipation of deregulation ( = "Food safety inspectors? Who needs'em...") we got an aquaponic system to grow greens. I strongly recommend this.

So I knew that Danica McKellar was a math major. I just found out that Felicia Day was one as well. (Because I'm compiling a not-so-serious list of other things you can do with a math major, that's why...)

Video editing this weekend. Clips coming soon.

I have confirmed that I'm a mathematician: I automated a task that would take 30 seconds to do manually. It took me half an hour, the last twenty minutes of which was because I miscounted.

First World Problem: Awhile back I started writing a paper on the mathematical analysis of English country dance. It's somewhere on a 128 GB flash drive...

So I did a search for "MAA meetings" (Mathematical Association of America), and the first few hits were for "Media Addicts Anonymous."

Day four of my Facebook vacation. I don't miss it. I'll go back, as I have too many contacts there to completely abandon the platform, but it's easier to break from than it might seem.

The debauchery continues...

Logged put of Facebook for the week.

With Jacqui at Arisia, I'm at home free to engage in debauchery.

I mentioned that I've decided to lean very heavily into the art-math connection. Current project: an English-country style dance built around the "Futurama Theorem." mathweb.ucsd.edu/~revans/keel...

After the Joint Meeting (Seattle), I took the opportunity to go to an open mic night at INSIDE. If I lived in the area, I'd be at this open mic frequently!

I've decided I'm going to lean in to the math and art track.

At Joint Mathematics Meeting in Seattle, where another attendee identified that I was wearing a Klein bottle scarf.

Student comment of the day: "I know I got a '2' on the final exam, but I still think I should have gotten at least a B in the course..."

Next stop, the Apollo.

So anyone who sees this will have seen it on other platforms, but I'm trying to get into the habit of crossposting...
