In Sept 1938 the British and French Prime Ministers, Chamberlain and Daladier, abandoned Czechoslovakia to Hitler. In March 2025 US President Trump betrays Ukraine to Putin, and goes further in openly supporting the aggressor. The US has chosen evil. #auspol

We're advertising a fully-funded PhD project at Durham in understanding microbial ecology from a theoretical and multidisciplinary perspective! More details below. Feel free to email me, Denis Patterson, or @thecopperdoctor.bsky.social. March 31st deadline. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

“Australia has been "left behind" on R&D” Oh, they’re very concerned about this, even though the Science/Industry Minister’s review only started this year & “will not be completed before the next election”. How could we have known this would happen? Let me count (a tiny fraction of) the ways👇

All I’m gonna say about today is that it is really tiresome to be telling mathematicians “let’s fight fascism” and the response is stuff like “I don’t like that you calculated estimated marginal means from your model.”

Whoa! Proudly on the front page of Washington Blade (the nation's oldest queer newspaper) with @judalicious.bsky.social, @qside.bsky.social. www.washingtonblade.com/2025/02/20/q...

I’m George Takei and I approve of this message.

I hope America is as lucky as the delta jet - everyone survives but the right wing explodes

w8 big ballz isn’t 1337?

Somebody paid attention in math class, and I for one, am glad they did. It kind of puts a needed perspective on things. Right, Elon?

Speaking from experience, yes.

Now I'm imagining a bunch of people getting to the end of a bag of crisps, seeing the last one and going "nah, I probably shouldn't".

Here's my idea for an app: The news, but it filters out anything to do with American politics or that unpleasant Musk fellow.

"The rule of law must now run its full course. Prince Harry & Tom Watson join others in calling for the police and Parliament to investigate not only the unlawful activity now finally admitted, but the perjury and cover ups along the way. Its clear now this has occurred throughout this process"

We are advertising two PhD scholarships to work on models of the interaction between ethnicity and infectious disease dynamics at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Open to international students. Please share! www.findaphd.com/phds/project... @iddjobs.bsky.social

Yes, they can hallucinate papers that don't exist, discuss results that seem to be imaginary, and can be confusing and inconsistent. But talking to tenured professors may still be helpful

Fully-funded PhD opportunity in mathematical biology and applied mathematics with Pascal Buenzli and me at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. Details at smb.org/Member-Forum... @smbmathbiology.bsky.social

If you’re not afraid of getting canceled, you fucking coward, why didn’t you let them print your name?

Peter Dutton says #AUKUS is "the greatest defence initiative in a generation". Really! A highly risky $368B all-eggs-in-one-basket capability that saps sovereignty, shifts billion$ overseas, and wont be fully delivered in full until well after 2050 (if ever). 🤦‍♂️ 1/2 #auspol

When reality meets expectations 😌 #phd #mathematics #biology

Starting to think that these people do not in fact value "sovereignty"

FYI for anyone interested in MuSpAn - we've updated the preprint this week with the full SI. Now featuring more examples of how various different spatial metrics can be strung together in order to make spatial pipelines focussed on specific biological questions! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Though being at this math conference is complicated for me because of my feelings about and experiences with the field, I am tremendously grateful to be here today to accept the Mary and Alfie Gray Award for Social Justice. awm-math.org/2025-mary-an...

New year, new office sign

Scores of top university bureaucrats earn more than the Federal Treasurer while teaching staff have been victims of massive wage theft. Our universities have become greedy corporations, no longer the nation building institutions they’re meant to be. 1/2 #auspol

Just squeezing into 2024, our latest paper on buckling epithelial layers. Fantastic work by the very talented Phill Brown, with James Osborne and Ben Binder doi.org/10.1016/j.mb...

Defence procurement is a shambles costing taxpayers billions of dollars and undermining national security. Yet not one admiral, general, air marshal or top bureaucrat is ever held to account for failure. And Richard Marles thinks #AUKUS subs will be delivered on time.🤷‍♂️ #auspol

Imagine surpluses generated by proper royalties, and fair tax paid by multinationals, value-add (manufacturing) occurring in-country, and billions of procurement dollars not wasted by Defence. Surely an Albo New Years’s resolution? #auspol

Dear academics We could dramatically reduce our administrative workload if we all just agreed not to ask for reference letters until we made our list of finalists. This is massive collective action problem has already been solved by… *checks notes* …every other industry on earth.

I hear some of you sometimes get grants. What’s that like then?

New slogan: MuSpAn - good enough to kickstart your Bluesky posting (I clearly have no future career in advertising) doi.org/10.1101/2024...

In a letter in the new issue of Mathematics Today, which just arrived, I talk about the range of degrees offering maths and how in my experience it’s a great option for students with lower A level grades. AMSP videos are here: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis... #MathsToday #UKMathsChat #ITeachMaths

I am thrilled to share our recent publication, "An off-lattice discrete model to characterise filamentous yeast colony morphology", which uses agent-based modelling and Bayesian inference to understand how yeast grows, is now available online in PLoS Computational Biology. doi.org/10.1371/jour...

Sums up 2024 precisely.

Australia's universities were established to be nation building institutions serving the public good, not greedy corporations lining the pockets of overpaid executives. This can be fixed - if only the Labor/Coalition duopoly had the will to do so. #auspol https://

Richard Boyle didn’t embezzle funds, compromise national security, or engage in malfeasance. His ‘crime’ was blowing the whistle on unethical and egregious ATO debt recovery practices. He’s being prosecuted under broken whistleblower protection laws while Mark Dreyfus sits idle. #auspol

I'm skimming Leah Edelstein-Keshet's Mathematical Models in Biology and came across this adorable illustration 🥰 Having heard her give a talk it really puts a level of charm and gentleness into her writing 😊
