Here’s just the most recent of the many NCCIH studies of #pain (from colleague @alexchesler.bsky.social published last week in Nature). Nearly 50% of NCCIH funding goes to studying pain, with a focus on nonpharmacological treatments and mechanisms. The proposed budget eliminates NCCIH.

The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion. Two decades on, it has generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more. If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

Trump proposes unprecedented budget cuts for US science in next fiscal year NASA cut by 24% NIH cut by 40% EPA cut by 55% NSF cut by 56% Analysis from @maxkozlov.bsky.social @dangaristo.bsky.social @alexwitze.bsky.social and @nature.com team www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Spencer Foundation joins Kapor Foundation, the William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to launch a rapid response bridge funding program (up to $25,000) for education scholars impacted by the abrupt grant cancellations by the National Science Foundation (NSF)! #AcademicSky

Contact your Representative and Senators & urge them to support investments in NSF and NIH. The Administration’s proposed cuts to these vital agencies will harm #science and hinder our prosperity, health, and well-being. www.psychologicalscience.org/act-now

The President's Budget While it is worth taking a look, the President's Budget is an aspirational document that does not normally get all that much attention from Congress, particularly if there are dramatic shifts. I am not going to worry much about this (yet). www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The President’s entire budget proposal destroys the state as we know it, and not in any kind of liberatory way. Here are the proposed NIH & NSF cuts. There will be no coming back from this.

NSF just revised its indirect cost policy—15%. When NIH tried the same, it led to lawsuits, layoffs, and a federal court injunction. Changes like this can wreak havoc on research. MORE ACTION ITEMS TO COME SOON. Stay tuned. www.nsf.gov/policies/doc... #NSFFreeze #WithoutNSF

I'm confused--are current/future NSF grants cancelled, as Nature reported? This new policy notice about a 15% indirect cost limit for *future* grants would suggest grants aren't cancelled? www.nsf.gov/policies/doc...

Crushing to hear of more junior colleagues in the computer science & human-computer interaction (HCI) space whose NSF CAREER grants were terminated this week. I'm hopeful that philanthropic funders can find a way to support this generation of scientists studying online manipulation, bias in AI, etc.

Come and join the research work of the Joint Research Centre @ec.europa.eu on the science behind science for policy, democracy, disinformation and polarisation! Deadline 14 May 2025. www.linkedin.com/posts/david-...

🧪💪I know folks are struggling to appeal #NSF grant terminations I created a generic GD version of our team's response plan, including a draft appeal*, based on compiled guidance. *Not a lawyer, best guess! Also, DMs open for ?/feedback. @davidimiller.bsky.social docs.google.com/document/d/1...

What are the current recommendations for online multilevel modeling tutorials?

It was nice to get some folks from the lab together for an end-of-the-year event to celebrate Sam Venezia becoming a Doctor and Samwell Cleary completing his master's!!! So proud of them!

A painful read

Our Annual Review of Sociology article on conceptualizing and measuring structural racism is now available. Get it while studying racism is still legal. @tyson-brown.bsky.social @pahoman.bsky.social (also, lots of great articles are in this volume). www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

We’re hiring postdocs to join my lab at UNC. If you’re interested in adolescence, brain, and social development, DM me. Our work incorporates fMRI, social media, and longitudinal methods. We study risks and opportunities in adolescence. If you’re at #SRCD2025 and want to meet, please reach out!

President Trump's push to freeze federal funding to universities has targeted elite institutions, like Harvard and Columbia. But many other schools are concerned that it threatens the future of research and development programs. nyti.ms/42N36hH

Sen. Ossoff: Who out there in the American public is sitting at home demanding that we shut down cancer research and Alzheimer's research?

I echo this! Thank you @profpaulboxer.bsky.social, @aaup.bsky.social bsky.social, Todd Wolfson, @mwyarbrough.bsky.social, and David Salas-de la Cruz for your leadership! Together we are stronger!!

"I would not have dared to dream that metastatic melanoma would become a treatable disease in my lifetime. Yet here we are today, with 43% of people diagnosed with metastatic melanoma living 10 years or more, due to treatments that we broadly refer to as cancer immunotherapy." Barry P. Sleckman, UAB

🥺 Please pay attention to what is happening to science!

We are pleased to invite you to the first edition of the Social & Moral Brain seminar: Emotions, Others, and Morality, October 16–17, 2025, at the Ghent University Museum (GUM) Forum Belgium. Call for abstracts until May 19th 🔗 Submission : thesmbseminar.sciencesconf.org/resource/pag...

Researchers in the US are seeking career opportunities abroad as President Donald Trump’s administration slashes science funding and workforce numbers, finds an analysis of Nature’s jobs-board data. #Academicsky 🧪

In 100 days in office, US President Donald Trump has destabilized eight decades of government support for science. This has included terminating more than 1,000 grants in areas such as climate change, cancer, and HIV prevention. Will US science survive Trump 2.0? www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Now do this for NIH and NSF.

All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding... I barely have words. Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

NEW: My latest story is about a surprising turn of events. A handful of scientists had NIH grants terminated by the Trump administration earlier this year — and now those grants are getting *reinstated*. Yes, you read that right. www.chronicle.com/article/thes...

🚨SCIENCE UNDER SIEGE: TRUMP’S FIRST 100 DAYS 🚨 In his first 100 days, Trump has declared war on science—slashing budgets, censoring facts, and meddling in research. From climate to cancer care, real lives are at risk. Here’s a thread on Trump’s assault on science so far—and why it matters: (🧵)
