Fitting research for #ForestFriday!

How awesome is this?! JAMA Network Open @jamanetworkopen.com - an open access journal in the JAMA Network - is now on BlueSky! #MedSky

I've been editing books for 20 years, and in that time I've learned: what you need when you edit (or your work is edited) is compassion. Editing really doesn't have to be merciless, ruthless. It can gently polish. #writesky #writersky #writing #writingcommunity #amwriting #amediting #editing

Today I asked AI to summarise an academic paper. The actual results were the opposite to what was hypothesised (and to what others had shown). The AI summary assumed the study had found what everyone else had found. Hot tip: don’t use a stochastic parrot to summarise an outlier paper. #academicsky 🧪

The ATS condemns the HHS Sec. Kennedy’s unilateral decision to dismiss all members of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This decision undermines decades of medical and scientific that have been vital to safeguarding public health. apnews.com/article/kenn...

If only methods sections were like this: "I almost got permission to film a hamster, but the mother of the hamster’s family was trying to keep her nine-year-old off TikTok and thought it would be pedagogically difficult to argue that the hamster could be on it but not the child." #research #scipub

Do you want to earn a living as a writer in 2025? @janefriedman.com has some great advice because the publishing world is changing. I talked to her this week about her updated book, "The Business of Being a Writer," and I've already recommended the book to multiple writers. 🧵

Forests are more than trees. We were captivated by the lush ferns in Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. Happy #ForestFriday, everyone! Life’s better outside.

ACOG is deeply disappointed by HHS’s move to drop COVID-19 vaccine recommendations in pregnancy. The science is clear: COVID-19 remains dangerous in pregnancy and vaccination protects both patients and newborns. The vaccine is safe and protects families. Read our full statement: buff.ly/OGue7sO

"AI" uses em-dashes because the writers whose (appropriated) work it's trained on use them. I use them a lot, personally, and of course just about everything I've ever written was chucked into the training bin without my consent or assent. So, you know, whenever you see an "AI" em-dash, think of me.

So happy for @marthawells.com and all the rest of us that Murderbot the TV series is now out in the world!

Great piece on how publication delays negatively impact careers and the pace of science. We just had a reviewer ask us why it's taken us so long to publish our data. It was because 2 other journals dragged review out for months and months only to reject it. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
