It turns out, poverty and misery in wealthy countries CAN be addressed by good governance and political courage in the face of rampant capitalism. I wonder if it will catch on?

this is genuinely so sweet and made me tear up. sometimes people are good

The Conservatives attacked Mark Carney relentlessly for having Irish and British citizenships, calling him a European even after he promised to end them. I look forward to seeing how both sides of their mouths work as American-Canadian Andrew Scheer takes over as interim Opposition leader. #cdnpoli

When my parents got married, their marriage was illegal in seven states. That’s how recent this shift is: my (still living) parents could not visit some states for the first four years of their marriage.

Guys I can explain why for at least 1750 of those years.

someone could write a Pink Pony Club parody with this

Today's "I can't believe I have to explain this to someone my age" installment: my co-worker couldn't read a file name in a file folder & didn't know how to slide the "file name" field over so it was big enough to show the entire file name.

Made good on my promise to chase the soccer team to make sure they ran their laps. I had to do an extra because a couple kids came late and were a lap behind.

My available tools for mowing my tiny front lawn are a rusty push-mower, grass shears, & a string trimmer (weed whacker). Usually the push-mower & shears are fine. So today, when I want to quickly trim it down I naturally cannot find any battery for the trimmer.

Canada’s political system is splitting in two. Liberals vs Conservatives now take 85% of the vote. NDP? Collapsing. Culture wars, education gaps, & tribal loyalty replacing real debate. It’s American-style polarization. #cdnpoli #PolarizedCanada #RealTalk #TwoPartyTrap

You are now required to have a cellphone to citizen. That should not be allowed. You should not be required to have a cellphone to work. But many employers make a cellphone a de facto requirement. It’s anti-poor. But it’s also anti-democratic.

Never forget, we were manipulated into hating carbon pricing here in Canada.

Do you have questions about equalization, why we have it, and how it works? In 2021, I recorded a great panel with some very smart Albertans, including @trevortombe.bsky.social @jaredwesley.ca @ericadams99.bsky.social and Ken Boessenkool, explaining it all. Perhaps just as relevant today! #ableg

On Reddit I saw someone say that this was fear mongering. And yes, let's not promote unwarranted fear of a government that has been ignoring due process for people within their borders & sending people to facilities known for flagrant abuses of human rights.

Yes, Trump’s crypto grifts, well reported in NYT, reveal unprecedented corruption. But they also reveal that the people who can ruin the economy are in effect shorting the US dollar.

Just passing along some friendly advice on how to approach potential changes to the Australian health care system @drruthmitchell.bsky.social

I think electoral reform is only part of the solution. There needs to be ways to safeguard our political process so that certain democratic and human rights principals are protected, even from within the government.

I’ve done my fair share of celebrity podcasts. It’s always interesting when they don’t air your episode because you gently pushed back on their misinformation. Like, I’m a doctor, I’m not just going to sit silently while you spread misinformation. But egos, I guess.

It's tax season, so I'm reminded of the time when my one of my co-worker's tax clients wanted to bring a gift for doing their taxes. She picked out a nice house plant - a cactus. And then covered it in tissue and put it in a gift bag. Friends, that is the wrong way to present a cactus gift.

Just explained what by-elections are to my co-worker and pitched why I think we need a new voting system to replace first past the post. Several of her family are NDP supporters so I explained how it could get parties like that more representation.

Desperately need a little country indicator on every politics skeet bc everyone is so politics-literate we've got US commenting on UK and UK commenting on Aus and everyone commenting on Germany and vice versa and I'm getting very lost

Running for a riding in a province undergoing corruption probes and that has a separatist movement making a lot of noise at the moment.

Lately it has taken 20 minutes or less to be annoyed with my co-workers lack of work.

You can spice it up with generic weather and sports stuff too.

in less than a week, two conservative opposition leaders in australia and canada who tried to win their elections on anti-woke platforms (with an air of You Know Who) have not only lost their elections, but lost their *seats* as well. yikes. www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...

Agree! How does forcing him out uphold democracy? Adherence to the letter of the law for the sake of feeling good at someone else’s expense isn’t democracy. He conceded the election, let the interim leader and him discuss it and come to a mutually agreeable decision about the house.
