NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's wife gave birth to their child without him after ICE denied their request to let him be present. “This was a purposeful decision by ICE to make me, Mahmoud, and our son suffer,” Dr. Abdalla said. “My son and I should not be navigating his first days on earth without Mahmoud."

The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled 8-1 that a trans teen cannot legally change their name until they turn 21 solely because they are trans despite having the support of both parents. This is unconscionable. www.advocate.com/law/mississi...

Pope Francis, who died Monday, had reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in an Easter Sunday message read aloud by an aide as the pontiff. In the message, the pontiff said the situation in Gaza was "dramatic and deplorable."

Confirming Hegseth really was insanely reckless.

Every single senator who voted to confirm Hegseth is equally responsible and owns this. Your confirmation served as a stamp of approval and your judgment shouldn't be trusted. This goes for every failure of any official confirmed by the Senate.

Closing embassies and consulates on an entire continent!

Staple this to RFK Jr’s forehead.

It's not dead at all. It's just starting. The US is big and information is slow to disseminate

So, I’m in prepper mode. Here’s what *Im* doing/thinking about stocking up on: -Updating electronics - non perishables (carbs, proteins, evaporated/ condensed milk) - any medical procedures that require specialized equipment (many of the parts come from China) -pet food and alternatives -water

With these posts, they’ve made it essentially inarguable that they’re deliberately defying the Supreme Court.

When rights are conditional they aren't rights, they're privileges My work is for everyone because everyone is entitled to basic respect, dignity, and rights, by the very nature of them being born into this world Me liking someone is not a prerequisite for dignity

I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy can’t mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. That’s the real test.

I like to assign my law students cases with uncharismatic defendants—people who are “no angels.” If you’re not willing to protect due process for those defendants, who else will you be willing to take it away from?

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

"We've seen a surge of people who want to show up. Our ICE Watch trainings are packed. Synagogues are organizing. There's more awareness, more resolve. New Yorkers are stepping up." Powerful reporting from @etannechin.bsky.social in @haaretzcom.bsky.social on Jewish immigrant rights organizing.

He couldn’t find anyone to tell him that wasn’t Spanish?? He hasn’t picked up Spanish as a New Yorker to recognize himself that wasn’t Spanish?? 🤡

🚨BREAKING: 4th Circuit Court of Appeal throws out Trump’s request to halt proceedings in the case of wrongfully imprisoned Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It is a devastating judgement. Just read this extract.👇

Juan Carlos Lopez Gomez is a US Citizen. His mom showed up to court house with his birth certificate AND his ss card but he is still being detained.

I've been taking early walks in the park to watch and listen to birds for my sanity, and the Merlin Bird ID app has been indispensable for identifying bird songs. Merlin was funded by a grant from the NSF, the science funding agency that Trump is trying to destroy. www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...

difficult to overstate how bad it would be for this effort to succeed

HERE WE GO: Chief Judge James Boasberg finds probable cause for contempt of court against the Trump administration. In a masterclass move, he asks the government whether they’ll purge the contempt (by complying) or identify the people in the administration who should be subject to sanctions.

vance is a detestable liar and an open enemy of the constitution. the central load bearing factual claim here is completely false and even if it wasn’t the constitution contains two explicit guarantees of due process

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

Oh my god you want me to find "evidence" before putting someone in jail? Every time?? Do you have any idea how long that would take

NYC friends! This Wednesday, April 16th, from 2 to 4 pm est, I’ll be moderating a critical discussion in NYC on “Africa in the Museum”—reparatory justice for stolen African art and heritage objects. The event is free and open to the public. Register here: www.eventbrite.com/e/africa-in-...

It’s almost like they don’t care whether these individuals are actually guilty of anything.

Yes, the cashier at Target should be able to afford rent, groceries, and bills with their paycheck alone. That’s what jobs are for.

I remember once being in a meeting where someone was talking about a school district (not mine!) turning away newly arrived immigrant families who wanted to enroll their kids. Someone was like, “that’s illegal.” The person describing what was happening goes, “I know. But they’re doing it.”

If you know me, you know that for many years I have been going on about the concept of moral injury. I think we suffer as a society from profound moral injury on a mass scale as a result of our warfare machine and our policing and carceral system. This is not new. And it has led us to this.

this administration had no problems fishing andrew tate out of a romanian prison

Good morning. Immigrants are #HereToStay.

One of the things that frightened me was an off-hand comment from Trump yesterday about "subway pushers," which I assume was him harkening back to high-profile murders committed by people with mental illness. In other words, the next move is going to be detention centers for people who are ill.
