Newark officials have said GEO Group is operating w/o a valid certificate of occupancy. After the site began housing detainees, Baraka began showing up regularly and requesting that he and fire officials be allowed to enter and inspect the facility. Each time, facility personnel turned them away.

After several requests that he leave, Baraka complied, according to 2 members of his group and video recordings. “Guy told me to leave, I left. I’m gone,” Baraka said. But more than a dozen federal agents went through the gate and arrested him anyway, placing him in handcuffs and leading him away.

She said charges against the 3 lawmakers were “definitely on the table.” But videos the Trump administration released to Fox News appeared to be far from conclusive, and accounts of the confrontation from witnesses and the members of Congress differ in significant ways from the government narrative.

One affidavit suggested that agents had considered trying to seize the mayor’s electronic devices at the finish line of the NYC Marathon in 2023. Instead, they approached him the next night outside an event in Greenwich Village and seized the devices after telling his security detail to step aside.

The warrant, one of dozens signed by federal judges during the nearly four-year bribery and fraud inquiry into Mr. Adams, was included among some 1,700 pages of records released late Friday in response to a request by The New York Times and The New York Post.

Federal authorities were forging ahead with their investigation. They obtained a new warrant authorizing them to search the phone of a person they believed had evidence of fraud and federal program bribery. Three days later, the Trump administration ordered them to abandon the case.

At a news conference, McIver said the lawmakers were “conducting an oversight visit” to the facility. Baraka had done nothing wrong before his arrest, she said. “What we see here is despicable, and we should all be angry,” she said. Menendez described Baraka’s arrest as “an act of intimidation.”

Rep. Rob Menendez said that ICE agents had “put their hands on” the two other members of Congress who were there, Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman and LaMonica McIver. “They feel no restraint on what they should be doing, and that was shown in broad daylight today,” he said.

UPDATE: Federal officials arrested the mayor of Newark while he and three members of Congress were protesting at a new immigration detention facility. The mayor, Ras J. Baraka, was taken to an ICE facility in Newark, his aides said.

This is a developing story and we're continuing to update it.

But data shows that voters may not have taken full advantage of the system in 2021, when there were 13 Democrats on the ballot. To show how ranked-choice voting could work this time, we’ve broken down what happened back then:

The timing coincides with the expected release of material related to the shuttered criminal case against Adams. The material, which is scheduled to be filed by DOJ late this afternoon, includes search warrants related to the investigation, as well as affidavits describing the evidence.

Those of us Boston sports fans who live and work in New York City, OTOH...

But the agency has now twice revised downward its initial forecast of 67.6M visitors since Trump declared a trade war on allies, mused about annexing other countries and ramped up an immigration crackdown that has resulted in the detentions of several foreign tourists.

Columbia security guards blocked them from leaving unless they showed their identification, causing an hourslong standoff. By about 7 p.m., Columbia administrators had called the NYPD back to campus for the first time since the occupation of Hamilton Hall in April 2024.

The C.D.C. has attributed 216 pediatric deaths nationwide to the flu this season, a number that is expected to climb before the end of the season, which is receding. More than 10 percent of those deaths occurred in New York State, which is home to less than 6 percent of the nation’s children.

The man, Tarek Bazrouk, 20, was arrested at three separate protests in Manhattan over roughly nine months after he kicked and punched Jewish protesters who were wearing religious attire or carrying Israeli flags, federal prosecutors said.

The governor is facing a wave of criticism over her efforts to weaken an obscure, century-old law that requires private schools to provide a basic education. Changing the law has been a top priority of the state’s Hasidic leaders, whose endorsements are highly coveted come election season.

The Democratic contenders include 2 members of Congress, 2 big-city mayors and 2 union leaders. “To have six Democrats, all who could pretty legitimately have a chance — that’s really rare,” said Kristoffer Shields, director of the Eagleton Center on the American Governor at Rutgers University.

The protesters, wearing masks and kaffiyehs, hung banners in the soaring main room of Butler Library’s second floor, renaming the space “the Basel Al-Araj Popular University,” according to the demonstrators and witnesses at the library.

The case suggests that the Trump administration is using the pretext of criminal investigations to speed deportations, said Peter L. Markowitz, an immigration law professor at the Cardozo School of Law who helped draft the city’s sanctuary laws.

The agreement brings to roughly $1 billion the amount paid for the wrongdoing of the doctor, Robert A. Hadden, coming after earlier settlements in which his former employers agreed to pay victims more than $200 million.

Cuomo’s campaign is gathering signatures for a party called Fight and Deliver, which uses as a symbol a set of boxing gloves. The move provides a measure of assurance for Cuomo. If he were to lose the primary, he could still appear on his independent ballot line in the general election.

Claire Shipman, the acting president, said in the announcement that Columbia would also be “running lighter footprints of research infrastructure” in some areas affected by the cuts. The university, she added, is continuing to negotiate with the federal government for the return of the grants.

Baraka has been trying to stop the facility, which is expected to hold up to 1,000 migrants a day, from opening. In court, the city has argued that the detention center’s owner, GEO Group — one of America’s largest private prison companies — had begun operating without the required permits.

Mamdani’s rising popularity and broad appeal is evident by the support he has received from donors across the city, in large swaths of neighborhoods in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, according to @nytimes.com analysis of campaign donations made from January 2022 to March 13 of this year.

It was not immediately clear if the city is scrutinizing Cuomo’s tactics. But the New York City Campaign Finance Board, the body responsible for enforcement, blasted out a warning on Monday reminding all city campaigns about the new rules, according to a copy of the email obtained by @nytimes.com
