at some point if you're willing to admit that this salute mimicks another *recent* famous salute you might as well just say which historical salute both are mimicking. but apparently nobody wants to be the first to say "Nazi"

Many universities have been operating under the assumption that first-gen low-income wasn't one of the "problematic" categories. but the latest Senate Committee report notes "socioeconomically disadvantaged" as a DEI social status. Is FGLI part of the purge? www.commerce.senate.gov/services/fil...

People that won't trust their neighbor with a food stamp voucher, but would trust a billionaire with their life savings.

There is so much to object to in that Ezra Klein interview with Kara Swisher. But let's be clear: what Musk is doing to the federal government is not like what he did to Twitter. Twitter is not an institution on which people's lives depend. Destroying government-not the same as f-ing up a tech co

I'm in the UK this week talking about precarity at Oxford and LSE. And I really wish the news wasn't just doing my work for me. 🙃 😭

Saw this, checked this, all true. And even worse: the FAA administrator had been unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2023, quit Inauguration Day because Elon Musk publicly said he should.

If your work has been affected by the (confusing, on again off again, but seemingly still being implemented in certain spheres) funding freeze, please share your story here: fedfreeze.org

This in addition to the NSF, NIH, CDC news... How quickly can the research power of the United States be demolished? And how quickly will non-US universities jump on the chance to entice researchers abroad? I guess we will find out. www.chronicle.com/article/trum...

Part of the problem with how we talk about privilege is that we make it seem like it's a status that protects you from social ills. But more and more we're seeing that it doesn't and that when we talk about it as if it does, we misdescribe the problems we face.

Can’t believe we wasted so much brainspace on this negotiating ploy. www.inquirer.com/news/philade...

I just came back from my first sewing class (inspired by my daughter, who loves her sewing class) at Butcher Sew Shop. All sorts of people eager to learn or relearn sewing. What a treat!

As we watch California, remember that the northeast is still technically under drought conditions. So come summer, we too might find ourselves facing horror scenarios. I so very much hope not.

Yes, this is worth checking out. Josh Johnson puts his finger on a complex knotty set of issues with such subtlety.

My husband was very excited to try one of these when we were in the Bay. Turns out they're often more expensive than cabs even though you are, in essence, a guinea pig for this company. They cut the cost of human labor, but you are not the one that is going to get those 'savings.'

I appreciate that Covid respects our equitable division of household labor, just as soon as I test positive, my husband tests negative and can emerge from quarantine to take care of our kid (still negative) and our household.

There seems to be an inverse correlation between the number of cancellation e-mails/texts I'm receiving and the number of inches the NWS is predicting for the Philadelphia area. I predict very few inches and a lot of grumpy, grumpy parents.

writing a new paper: this is such a cool idea, i can't believe people haven't been writing about this, oh wait, everyone has written about this, how can i even look at myself in the mirror, i might as well delete this and start over, oh, the deadline is in a week, i guess it'll have to do

Our neighbors, city, and state decided not to make this part of Washington Ave safer.

Listening to Chappell Roan's Kaleidescope, 7-year old: Mom, this song is anti-science. Me: Why? Her: She's singing that we can't understand how love works. 😂

I've been reading FDR's speeches on Social Security and finding hope in the fact that it is still one of the most cherished government programs supported by an astounding number of Americans (8 in 10).

Gingerbread house project has started. An architect, a philosopher, and a 7-year-old all with strong opinions. Currently debating whether we want a profile of Ben Franklin or the Phillies P on our gingerbread row home.

OUP refuses to send me a hard copy of the latest edition of @jowolff.bsky.social excellent Introduction to Political Philosophy, which I'm using in a 100+ person class in the Spring. They insist on an e-copy. I try to avoid reading books on devices & ban devices in class, so this is a real bummer.

Just returned from visiting family in the UK & had the worst jet lag of my life. I was up almost every night from 1am-5/6am, even w/o naps, which basically meant I got 3 hours of broken-up sleep on multiple nights. 🧟‍♀️I'm going again in February to give some talks, send me your best jet lag tips pls.

Jet lagged so decided to have an almost full workday between the hours of 1 and 6am.
