A helpful guide to the current state of US trade policy:

Trump exempting computers & phones from the tariffs today means that Chinese-made laptops now have lower tariffs than European Cars, Mexican Steel, & Canadian Lumber. Also means Vietnamese-made laptops have a lower tariff than Ethiopian coffee, Indian tea, & Guatemalan bananas

RFK believes that he is one of the genetic elect and that it is a violation of the natural order to either impose on the genetic elect with public health OR prevent nature from taking its course with those who are predestined to biological damnation.

After extensive research into possible alternatives, I deeply regret to inform you that if you want something to happen you have to do the work to make it happen.

So we're not building iPhone factories in the us then? Also - just wait til China decides to ban the export of anything we label as "chip making equipment"

Also, happy Passover to those celebrating, and here's hoping you have a minimum of arguing with older right-wing family members spoiling the day.

All of these spoke to me, deeply.

We're less than $6k away from breaking $50,000 for #TransRightsBundle25! I'd love to see us cross that threshold over the weekend! Sunday night we'll be doing another Bloodborne stream - this time with a wheel of punishments for every $100! (Plus a special surprise if we hit $50,000!)

Really want everyone in a position of power and influence to internalize that these people are goons. Their work is illegal, they are implementing it haphazardly and they don’t have the state capacity to do fascism on their own. They are paper tigers. Just Say No.

People will always say they’re your friend and they support you no matter what but then they’ll say some toxic shit to you like “you have to let go of the cursed amulet, it’s changing who you are” and “don’t let its power corrupt you” all because they want the amulet for themselves

How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia? Before you open this thread, take a guess. Settle on a number and then compare it to what you'll learn in this thread. 🧵

Write readable code, not clever code. Both is good. But choose readable over clever, every time, when you have to choose. #LifeInTheCodeMines

This is a difficult time in financial markets but the real victims are the countless numbers of faceless small and mid-sized businesses who import from China and are getting vaporized overnight, and the White House would never take their calls.

There's a certain kind of tech guy who is still mad because he was "forced" to take humanities coursework where they exposed him to uncomfortable ideas like "exploiting people is unethical" and "other people deserve rights" and so now they must destroy the system

look, people can do what they want and keep their newsletter wherever but I don't share or click on posts (even ones I want to read!) that are hosted on substack bc everything about it makes me feel so icky ever since that interview the ceo did w/ the verge tbh

Yep. I saved hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month just from switching from Substack to self-hosted Ghost. I pay a roughly flat $85/month now (~$75 for mailsending, $10 for hosting), vs. 10% of all my subscription income.

Critics of surveillance, datafication and AI are often accused of being alarmist and even hysterical in pointing out the potential for supposedly benign systems to be used in malign and expansive ways. But we’re seeing now how dangerous it was for those critiques to be dismissed.

things I want to emulate from the 1960s in 2025: the eyeliner things I don’t want to emulate from the 1960s in 2025: being unable to open a line of credit in my own name independent of my husband’s

yeah man, please make my 85 year old great aunt prove her citizenship to vote in rural georgia, this definitely isn’t reminiscent of anything in the american past

A big failing of our society is turning decision making over to algorithms that allow humans to ditch responsibility for their actions This has been happening for a hundred years, but genAI speeds this up by giving the process made up justifications that previously someone had to find
