This kind of funny for me because I considered my Dad a conservative—Korean and Vietnam vet, Southern farmer with a lot of conservative values, but he hated conservative Rs. When a ConVet came around proclaiming loudly he would only say “Uh huh” and puff on his cigarette.

Homes for sale are lower than many places. But what is crazy expensive, relatively speaking, is rent! I hear that is mainly because many people who work in DC find it cheaper to live in Maryland, which also helps drive up prices.
