They have been a surveillance state before as well, just not considered hostile.

You are correct, but "chöp" is what you would except such a Swedish device to sound like when it's operating.

"Can't we just get back to normal??" is such a useless message because 1) even doing that would require massive institutional changes as you point out and 2) people were sufficiently unhappy when things were Normal to get us to where we are right now.

There's arguably something positive too: Those that rely on a public ledger are transparent, which can reduce the risk of corruption and fraud, and increase accountability. And no state can simply print more money to balance its budget (although an independent central bank accomplishes the same).

For society at large, I don't think they offer much utility compared to Fiat money and credit cards. They are very volatile, which also makes them speculative; payments are slower to process, and it's unclear how well they would scale if they ever became popular; and regulatory status is unclear.

Bitcoin was created to show that the Double Spending problem can be solved in decentralized networks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-... . Other cryptocurrencies have added various interesting and potentially useful features on top of that. (Though, not sure about the real-world benefits of those.)

There used to be a saying: "The only way to get rich in a casino is to own one." I guess that's not the case anymore.

I think this is more on the positive side in the long run. The United States has kept a lot of levers to themselves when it comes to controlling how to defend Europe. If listening to these guys barking is what is required to achieve strategic independence from the US, we can tolerate it.

This is a new global economy in which Europe and the US are declining in power, uncomfortably. How we deal with that is currently being handled extremely badly if at all.

And the audience is not those in power but rather the citizens who grant them power in democracies. These matters may not have a direct impact on most citizens, which is why it is important to explain why they should care and why they should show their support already today.

Nah, he just needs to make some room so the head doesn't bump into the ceiling of the chart when the explosive growth starts.
