I'm so heartbroken to see all the homes destroyed by the firestorms in Greater Los Angeles —for both people and wildlife. This palm tree on @caltech.edu campus was once a food bank for resident acorn woodpeckers. My photo was taken just five days before the disaster. #wildfires #birds

@caltech.edu might be a small campus, but never short of wildlife! Here are some #wildlife photos I took over the past few months /n #addBirder #birds

I wrote about a scientific paper called “The Unbearable Slowness of Being” which finds that the human brain’s throughput is just 10 bits per second. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/26/s... 🧪

Congrats to @jieyusz.bsky.social and @mameister4.bsky.social on their Neuron paper unpacking an unresolved paradox in neuroscience. It's terrific to see it capture the public imagination, including Scientific American. www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-...

Attached is a piece of art by me for "The Unbearable Slowness of Being: Why do we live at 10 bits/s?" Hope this will inspire you to think about the brain from a new perspective!

"[It’s] the largest unexplained number in brain science. I feel like neuroscience should pay more attention to it ..." said Marcus Meister when @claudia-lopez.bsky.social sat down with him and @jieyusz.bsky.social for a Q&A about the brain's information-processing rate. #neuroskyence bit.ly/3ZXxWTf

This upcoming winter term @caltech.edu, I’ll lead an undergraduate tutorial on "The Ethology of Learning"👇! It’ll run 10 weeks (1-hour lectures + 2-hour readings per week). Suggestions for readings + nominations for guest lectures are welcomed! Things to do over the holidays...

Huge thanks to @johnjvastola for the kind invitation and intro! 🙏 And to the @harvardmed neuroscience audience for your questions. 🧠✨ Hope this talk sparked ideas on the role of the cortex! Slides now uploaded: https://t.co/gEUqQGNlVm https://t.co/eEN4PiWFjU

Outside the lab, I’m all about birds 🦅and art 🎨. It’s like weekend research, but with more instinct than effort —watching animals in the wild is very inspiring. Check out this short piece from Victoria Thomas @LocalNewsDena on my birding adventures: https://t.co/YNLafTjuOK

Thank you @DiscoverMag for a nice summary of "The Unbearable Slowness of Being" by me and @mameister4! https://t.co/ZoPBANdR67 If you are new to neuroscience, give it a read! Small suggestion & a little plug: How about using my art instead of the stock photo? 🎨😊

What do neuroscientists do on weekends? Art is an option! 🎨 Here’s a piece I did in 2021 when writing “the Unbearable Slowness of Being” https://t.co/rUUyNaWoD1. This painting is on the wall of our lab. Check out more arts & science here: https://t.co/aoRBzfJsLR https://t.co/fMo1NYS4V9

Fun fact: a good portion of the literature search was done during a remote rotation while COVID-quarantining in a hotel in Singapore. Three years later I’m still suffering from COVID… https://t.co/TlWgAnfImG

Nice Ambition from @elonmusk @djseo_ @neuralink 🚀, but we @mameister4 kindly invite you to read our words of caution first😉⚠️, now on arXIV: https://t.co/rUUyNaWoD1 Academics, please join the discussion on alphaxiv: https://t.co/IHaA4FhPvg. Just one thought at a time please!

Few-shot learning observed: it took me 6 peanuts to befriend a local fox squirrel. Now he checks my window daily—no extinction yet. Sure, squirrels already have representations of humans as food sources, but doesn't this hint at meta-learning too? (Photo today at @Caltech) https://t.co/GIlvDUCrNt

COVID got me good😷, probably from the epic party at @MITMuseum... No regrets for me though—Seeing Shannon's Theseus is a Maze researcher's dream come true! Wishing everyone at #CCN2024 @CogCompNeuro good health! Stay safe, folks! https://t.co/KrpGbEIA5h

Slides, poster, and a clip of my talk are now up on my website (https://t.co/s0bcfRt31z)! Stay tuned—an exciting and mysterious preprint is dropping any second😉

Finally! My #CCN2024 talk is today at 4 pm. If you didn't check out my @CogCompNeuro poster yesterday, make sure you watch this cute mouse video: https://t.co/bnpGalVJzC

You can also check out my PI @mameister4 ‘s book review: https://t.co/1WUouI48Co

Fan moment today at #CCN2024 @CogCompNeuro: have my copy of Models of the Mind signed by the author @neurograce! If you haven’t, this first-of-its-kind computational neuroscience book is totally worth a read! https://t.co/JGTNN5LKk1

🎥 The first-ever acortical mouse solving a maze video is now live! Check it out: https://t.co/4iYremLVaX

🚨 Excited to present a poster & give a talk at #CCN2024 @CogCompNeuro @MIT next week with @rogerioagjr! Featuring our latest work with @mameister4 & @PietroPerona on the Manhattan Maze, including data from mice without cortex. Details: https://t.co/s0bcfRtAR7

And many thanks to the photographer Karen Cohen Photography :)

So honored to be one of the female student leaders at the Class of 1974 Women's Luncheon at @caltechalumni #Caltechevents! It was so inspiring to hear the fearless stories of these amazing alumnae. @Caltech experiences prep us to tackle anything life throws our way! https://t.co/mHzwRjXTOg

We @yingxijin_ @linjing_fang were honored to host Dr. Gerry Rubin for the @NeuroTechers fireside chat @CaltechN! 🔥 Thank you for sharing the inspiring journey of founding @HHMIJanelia and engaging with our students’ challenging questions. ⭐️ https://t.co/VA2C6P6S4b

Special thanks to my cohost @yingxijin_ !

Thank you all for attending our first @NeuroTechers Fireside chat of the year! Many thanks to @MengyuLiu96 @Yi_SangHyun @neurosenthali Weilun and Jon for sharing your precious neuroscience experiences at Caltech @CaltechN! We learned a lot about advisor-wrangling strategies 😉 https://t.co/EfQDAjzjAJ

Made a neurosciency poster yesterday following the advice from ChatGPT and DALLE-2 😅 https://t.co/eSCfWqyCUa

Happy New Academic Year! I'm honored to announce that this year I'll be the president of the @NeuroTechers, our grad-student-led club for Neuroscience enthusiasts at @Caltech. If you want to connect with our @CaltechN Community, talk to me!

What an experience #SfN2022! So many neuro-conversations, new friends, and unexpected reunions… in just 5 days. I’m so pumped by all the discoveries of 🧠 and mind as a neuroscience toddler 🤩 Special thanks to all those who came to our poster! 🐭 See you next time! https://t.co/2hEuhvoZ4P

3 reasons you should see our poster this afternoon: #SfN2022 @SfNtweets 🐭Our mice learned 3 sequences x 9 decisions x 4 choices in TWO DAYS, 50+ times more than many weeks- and months-long 2AFC 🐭It has the most marvellous moniker👇 🐭It has a movie https://t.co/01XKw04m1S

How fast and how much can a mouse learn in two days? Here is our attempted answer🐭: https://t.co/kuhXAjaaUx Come to see our #SfN2022 poster at 1-5 pm this Sunday 13th! (VV10, 237.06) @rogerioagjr @mameister4 @PietroPerona
