This is how you actually do it. Create a schism between the cops and ICE. Who's really in charge? The answer is neither of them. The people and the courts are in charge, so let them figure this out with each other. Secret police are no one's allies.

MASSIVE good news for trans people in the United States. A federal judge has just granted class action status to transgender people looking to update their passports. This means that very shorty, the window will open to update your passports with the correct gender marker.

Cain is a great avatar for Trumpism, emerging on the scene late in the game with no understanding about anything, no appreciation for depth or history, and absolute confidence in the easiest, wrongest answer.

Having a bit of a hard time with the concept that if a guy in a police uniform who has a police vehicle shows up I should lock the doors and call 911, but if a guy in a ski mask with an hGH gut appears to be kidnapping my neighbor, I shouldn’t ask who he is if I don’t want federal charges.

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

Padilla: I was forced to the ground, first on my knees and then flat on my chest. And as I was handcuffed and marched down a hallway repeatedly asking, why am I being detained? Not once did they tell me why. I pray you never have a moment like this

Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, another mayor candidate who has cross endorsed Lander, speaks to crowd.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds. He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings. He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights. This is political intimidation.

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife. While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE. This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

The Atlantic should be ashamed of publishing this nightmare piece from Liz Bruenig, whose callous dismissal of Adriana Smith's dignity is one of the most shocking things I've ever read.

Remember this? Does the @nytimes.com remember this?

citizens of new york city: do not heed the word of the failing new york times. listen instead to beloved ugly house blog mcmansion hell and rank Zohran Mamdani #1 on your ballot. DO NOT RANK SUBURBANITE AND BIKE-LANE PARKER ANDREW CUOMO mcmansionhell.com/post/7865401...

New Yorkers scream out each officer’s lawsuits against them for excessive force and more upon their city, right to their faces while protesting.

i realize that everybody has their hands extremely full rn but it should be a way bigger deal that mike lee is trying to sell off beautiful, pristine public land

Free Market is when the entire country is owned by a handful of insane ravenous assholes who use the government to protect them from competition

Is it one of those things I'm just not seeing or is the TV news really not headlining that the dude targeted democrats and had a list of democrats?

The Times questioning Zohran’s experience kinda just boils down to ideology & racism but the idea of 33 being too young to hold a major political office is so funny. If he was a CEO of a startup that produced something worse than nothing they’d write a glowing feature on his new bold ideas.

I love all the handwringing about Zohran’s lack of experience when a 19 year-old called Big Balls has recently been made a permanent federal employee with the title Senior Advisor at the GS-15 pay grade in the General Services Administration.

NYT last year: We're no longer going to endorse in local races. www.nytimes.com/2024/08/12/b... NYT as soon as a candidate they don't like has a shot at winning:

Alright everyone, one last push. If you or anyone you know is: - LGBTQ+ - 13-24 years old - In the US Trevor Project is recruiting responses for their survey on LGBTQ+ mental health. It has HUGE impacts on policy, please take it and share widely if you can :) trvr.org/survey2025

Unions from around the world have placed plaques on the Haymarket memorial in Chicago. It’s pretty cool to see the continued resonance of an event that occurred in the US but is mostly forgotten here. It’s telling that one of the only US plaques is from the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists

I don't think I've ever felt more like burning it all down than I have while witnessing the elite project to turn Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander into scary, incompetent monsters while turning an actual incompetent monster, Andrew Cuomo, into a merely complicated fellow who just made an oopsie.

The Times saying last year they'd no longer endorse candidates in local elections, then immediately being like "oh but not THAT guy" 10 months later because the candidate wants free buses gives away the whole game. "Objectivity" means you break your own rules to punch left as much as you want.

this is obviously something to take seriously but i am also struck by how the white house’s only move is to double down, no matter how unpopular or politically disastrous it might be

Powerful sign from a #NoKings protest in Washington state. Vaccines save lives!

The Atlantic piece on Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo is full of holes. Mamdani's proposals are picked apart and labeled unrealistic while Cuomo's supposed goals aren't even elaborated on. Cuomo is "an asshole, but he's our asshole"—the New Yorkers who he has sexually harassed might think otherwise

Because of course he did.

Journalists, once again: Get used to using the word LIE. In fact, put that ish in your editorial policies.

yes. i think the only thing the white house has accomplished this week is dramatically grow the crowds against them.

go ahead, post another "both sides" take. tell me about cafeteria complaints and affinity group graduations at liberal arts colleges set the groundwork for today's DHS. write another essay comparing the domestic mobilization of the military to the social dynamics of leftist group chats.

Okay, the Aliens joke got me

*whispers* liberals and leftists making alliances to take power away from centrists is good, actually

Things are dogshit, but I am very proud to work here today.

I forget that a lot of people didn't grow up in super conservative southern baptist homes and don't know about why so many christians are extremely pro-israel

When a cabinet member announces "We are using the military to liberate an American city from its elected leaders," where do you go from there. What is left to say. The idea of that being anything short of a near-universal "Wait, what the fuck is going on" moment proves how far we've backslid.

notice the b-b-b-but biden response to "looks like trump is in decline"

This is the most straightforward thing they've said so far. They're using the military to "liberate" Los Angeles from its mayor and governor.

okay but the thing about the CIA is that the mythology of the agency belies the reality, which is that for much of its existence it was a rubber room for WASP failsons and their operations reflect this

SHUT. IT. DOWN. A senator was dragged out of a press conference for standing up for his constituents and against fascism. Watch how your representatives and senators respond to their own colleague being treated like this. That'll show you how they'll react when it's *you* on the ground.

a stark admission that they are here to usurp the authority of our duly elected government officials, punctuated by the physical removal of a US senator. Call it tyranny, call it fascism, call it authoritarianism. It's here, and it's coming for us all if we let this stand.

So they're openly admitting that the military occupation of Los Angeles is meant to eliminate its political leadership who disagrees with the regime?

Kristi Noem must resign. She has deported a four year old with cancer, detained a U.S. marshal, and arrested two members of Congress. She’s lost the confidence of the American people. ICE must stop terrorizing our communities.

this is egregiously bad and all of these people should go to prison, but this is not what a stable regime who are secure in their consolidation of power looks like, they’re coming unglued

NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL. Thank you Senator Padilla for defending your constituents and showing exactly what Kristi Noem and this administration stand for.
