#Butterflies One of the first visits by Monarch butterflies this year.

This is NGC3184, an unbarred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major that is often called the Little Pinwheel given its resemblance to the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101). A full resolution version is available in my Gallery: app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=... #astrophotography

This is the iconic globular cluster (M13) that I captured over the last two almost full moon nights. It is the brightest globular cluster visible in the northern sky. #astrophotography

This is Mars and the Beehive cluster (M44) on May 2nd, captured with the AT115EDT with the .65 reducer (35 x 2 minute exposures) and the ASI2600MC. #astrophotography

This very dim planetary nebula (SH2-290) in Cancer includes 7.41 hours of exposures from 2022, 2023, and 2025. At the end of our Sun's life billions of years in the future it may look much like this beauty! #astrophotography More details in my gallery: app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=7

This is a close-up of NGC 2237 in the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros. It is composed of two nights of 5 minute exposures in the short two hour window when it is available from my backyard. More details in the ALT TEXT and in my gallery: app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=... #astrophotography

TRAGEDY AND LOSS After the tragic earthquake that struck in Myanmar and Thailand last week, a statement in last Friday’s USAID employee log read, “The U.S. government no longer has the personnel or tools to respond when our global neighbors request assistance.” www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

NGC2419 is one of the furthest away of the globular clusters in the Milky Way in Lynx, estimated to be 275,000 light years away. I captured this data in April 2024. It is sometimes called the Intergalactic Wanderer. More details in my gallery: app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=... #astrophotography

This egret was a welcome surprise yesterday during a visit to a “new (for me)” park. I especially like the strong shadow on the rock. #birds

These are two versions of a wide-field image of the Rosette and Cone nebulas in Monoceros. The left image is a modified SHO palette adding the SII/OIII signal from a dual band filter with the HA/OIII signal of the image on the right. More details in the ALT descriptions. #astrophotography

Despite the high clouds during the total lunar eclipse last night I was able to capture this image at the end of the totality period by extracting two JPEG images from 2 minute videos and combining them with Affinity Photo. Luna rules again! www.astrobin.com/xh0pg3/?forc... #astrophotography

The rain this week has provided an opportunity to reprocess some of my favorites such as M101, the Whirlpool Galaxy from June 2023, just after the new Supernova in May 2023 in the upper right arm. www.astrobin.com/iqt1hs/?forc... #astrophotography

This emissions nebula in Monoceros was named the Puppy Paw Nebula by my artist wife. We hope it inspires you to support your local rescue organization and to hug your puppy today if you have one to hug! www.astrobin.com/ujtpv4/?forc... #astrophotography

I captured 3 x 2 minute videos of the moon, one day after the first quarter on March 7, 2025 and extracted three images from the frames using Planetary System Stacker, and merged them with Affinity Photo. app.astrobin.com/i/4yzhvb #astrophotography

I reprocessed 4 short videos from the occultation of Mars by the moon on January 13th, and am glad to get a better image. At only 20 degrees above the horizon and just emerging from behind the trees it was literally lucky imaging! #astrophotography www.astrobin.com/536v8m/B/?fo...

Timothy Snyder brilliantly sums up today’s tragedy.

Venus dancing with a cloud in twilight from my backyard on February 22nd.

The Monkey Head Nebula in Monoceros was one of my earliest targets and continues as a favorite. In this version I combined the signals from two dual narrowband filters with a one shot color camera to produce this image. www.astrobin.com/5qd5k4/?forc... #astrophotography

Can’t imagine that health care is being weaponized. Everyone wants to be healthy. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s...

This is the final image of the Cone Nebula (NGC2264), the reflection nebula IC447, & Hubble's Variable Nebula in Monoceros. I added another 3.5 hrs with an UV/IR filter to bring out the reflection nebula & star color, with 10.5 hrs total exposure. www.astrobin.com/0q6riu/E/?fo... #astrophotography

The Cone Nebula & a reflection nebula in Monoceros adding another 3.5 hours SII & OIII signal, for a total of 7 hours of exposure. I plan on capturing a few hours of RGB signal & adding it to this to complete the project tonight. www.astrobin.com/0q6riu/B/?fo... #astrophotography

This is the first 3.5 hours of ionized hydrogen and oxygen exposures of the nebulosity surrounding NGC2264, the Cone Nebula, including the faint reflection nebula IC447 at lower right. SII and more OIII will then be added, followed by RGB frames. www.astrobin.com/0q6riu/?forc... #astrophotography

I am happy to share this work in progress of NGC2335, the Seagull Nebula in Monoceros. I was able to get the FOV with my 80mm APO with a reducer, producing a fast F4.8 combination. app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=... #astrophotography

I have been working on capturing the Witch Head for several years, and happy to finally get this image to share. Is all the crazy politics a bad spell from this witch? app.astrobin.com/u/JimCase?i=... #astrophotography

Weather created the opportunity to reprocess the Crab Nebula (M1) with PixInsight, Blur Exterminator, and Affinity Photo. So much to learn with these new tools! Supernova remnants make such great narrowband targets in my light polluted sky. www.astrobin.com/09umn8/C/ #astrophotography

May we all have the courage to speak truth to power.

This is SH2-264, a ionized nebula region surrounding the blue giant star Meissa at the top of the constellation Orion, in a region relatively close to us where new stars are born. In this orientation for some it may look like the Orion’s Head. www.astrobin.com/93p321/B/ #astrophotography

The Orion constellation shines bright in the winter sky and this wide field image captures some of the most iconic and most often imaged targets including the Orion and Horsehead Nebulas and almost all of Barnard’s Loop. www.astrobin.com/6ln659/ #astrophotography

The image is composed from 4 short videos (Lucky Imaging!) of the occultation on January 13, 2025. (More details in my gallery.) The Moon was only about 20 degrees high and had just emerged from a tall tree in my Eastern view, producing a soft image. www.astrobin.com/536v8m/ #astrophotography

I am revisiting one of my favorites - the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros (SH2-275) an HII emissions region that is part of the Rosette Molecular Cloud. I combined exposures using two different telescopes and cameras for this image. www.astrobin.com/m9t0vm/ #astrophotography

Tomorrow night (January 14th between 1:45 UT and 2:25 UT) Mars will be occulted behind the moon. Stellarium says this is where it will emerge in first image. It will be pretty low (10 to 20 degrees) at my location and I will try to capture it from my deck, wind permitting. #astrophotography

Winter winds in Southern California created a break in my efforts. Let me share an older Dumbbell Nebula (M 27) image in the constellation Vulpecula, which shows several ejected outer layers captured with about 10 hours of exposures with a color camera. #astrophotography www.astrobin.com/a5wlhu/0/

Three stunning cosmic objects are featured in this wide-field image including the Lagoon Nebula (M8), the glowing nebulosity next to it (IC 1274), and the Trifid Nebula (M20). Set in the rich star field of the Milky Way in Sagittarius captured last summer. www.astrobin.com/kglumm/ #astrophotography
