Sileita continues to shine as a matriarch of our Nursery herd: calm, fair, and endlessly nurturing, with a fondness for Wamata. Wamata, for her part, is starting to find her voice. And then there’s Mushuru - on the left - the cheekiest member of the herd! sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/keepers-diaries

Around 57 dangerous pesticides banned in the EU are still used in South Africa. Some are neurotoxic, others cause cancer or harm the environment Yet it is often EU companies that produce & export these pesticides My deep dive from the ground for @arc2020.bsky.social www.arc2020.eu/spilling-eur...

Just like NGOs and judges, independent journalists provide the lifeblood of democracy. They will sometimes say things you don't like. But muzzling them sends you down a dark alley that ends in a nasty place. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/a...

🚨 #Cormorant Killing Proposed! Today, EIFAAC (part of FAO) dropped its draft European Cormorant “Management” Plan, and it’s grim. What’s in it? Coordinated culling and oiling are among the suggested measures. Random targets. No goal. No clear metrics. Just killing.

Probably the best example of a collapse in the uptake of carbon dioxide on land (LULUCF) is in Finland. A significant and sustained carbon sink turned into a source in 10 years. robbieandrew.github.io/country/?cou... 1/

The quickest and most surefire way to kill a living planet? Relentlessly turn ancient ecosystems composed of countless, interconnected species into monocrops. That is *exactly* what we are presently doing the world over, from Malaysia to Ireland.

The rapacious Nordic forestry industry is clear-cutting away Europe's climate defences.

Insect collapse is a mostly unseen calamity unfolding at terrifying speed all around us, threatening the core foundations of land-based ecosystems. phys.org/news/2025-04...

There were endless warnings that Brexit would lead to scrapping EU laws protecting nature. And many reassurances this would not be the case. It is now becoming clear what is actually happening.

BREAKING NEWS: Our Umani herd just got a little bit bigger! At 9am this morning — after a pregnancy that kept us all waiting — Zongoloni’s baby was finally ready to make his debut. Zongoloni gave birth amidst her human-elephant family, safely delivering a beautiful little boy.

Trump is stripping protections from marine protected areas.🎣 The U.S. president's 🇺🇸proclamation titled “Unleashing American commercial fishing in the Pacific” is just the beginning, but it's a massive problem for marine life & even the future of fishing. theconversation.com/trump-is-str...

Samuel Alito does not deserved to be called a “justice.” Nothing he does has any relation to fair and equitable treatment of people, regardless of their class or standing. Call him what he is - a religious zealot intent on imposing theocratic rule.

My local supermarket has a lot of butter-like spreads, but I couldn't find a single one without palm oil, something that's likely replicated across the world. The innocent-looking face of tropical ecocide on an unfathomable scale, and an example of where precision fermentation has HUGE potential.

The ongoing anti NGOs witch hunt, and the anti-science and facts campaign, are not isolated from the bigger game plan. The end point is ever clearer. @eppgroup.bsky.social and other mainstream forces need to choose the side of history they want to be on.

The pesticides debate is regularly framed as "NGOs vs Farmers". But it's farmers that are most exposed. They fall Ill and die in droves. Thanks to those claiming to represent their interests. There must be a better way.

Only about 3 or 4 years ago, a deathly silent sitka plantation was clear felled here. Now it's thick with wild native trees, NONE of which was planted. It's already heaving with insects + birds, and will keep getting better if left alone. THIS is how we should be bringing our forests back. 🌍

ALL the reasons for bringing back lynx apply to Ireland. Let's make our island a wilder, less sterile, better place for people and nature! 🌍

Crab apple in blossom. Its scientific name, Malus sylvestris, means 'forest apple'. When I arrived 16 years ago, there were only four wild apple trees in the whole rainforest. This is one of at least a dozen that have sprung up since grazing pressure was radically reduced. #Rewilding 🌏

A rewilding approach “is necessary to address biodiversity loss, climate change, and habitat fragmentation by making forests more ecologically resilient and better able to store carbon and sustain wildlife.” So let's get on with it!! #Rewilding 🌎 news.mongabay.com/2025/04/dive...

I will never understand the logic/appeal of managing a verge outside your home in the country-side, by spraying harmful herbicide, making it look hideous. Just why? How much unneccesary harm has this caused to waterways, invertebrates & other wildlife as well as being a total eyesore!

An Bord Pleanála has sent extensive further information requests to 3 offshore wind projects - Oriel, NISA & Arklow Bank - that are currently seeking planning permission. They have until January 2026 to respond www.independent.ie/irish-news/o...

Some people were probably a bit thrown by my inclusion of a straight-tusked elephant in my last book, 'The Magic of an Irish Rainforest'. The paper below by @jcsvenning.bsky.social and others shows one of the reasons why it's there.

Blaming farmers is a mistake. *Society* has decided that the only way farmers can be allowed to make a living on such rough ground is through sheep or sitka plantations. So that's what they have to do. If they were given the option of being paid to rewild (as for sheep/sitka), many would take it.

The narrative that monoculture tree plantations can in any way help with the climate crisis is pure greenwash. The sooner we acknowledge that reality, the sooner we can start looking at options that DO make a difference, like natural forest *ecosystems*.
