How susceptible are insect pollinators to population fragmentation due to anthropogenic land-use changes? This review identifies research gaps and needs on population genetic connectivity for bees and hoverflies @respublications.bsky.social resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Declining pollinator diversity harms plant reproduction—but not all pollinators or plants are affected equally. A global meta-analysis shows wild, nocturnal, and invertebrate pollinators matter most. Biodiversity loss threatens ecosystem function. #Pollination #BiodiversityCrisis

🔥The more we learn, the worse it gets…🫣 scary start to the @granthamicl.bsky.social Climate Research Showcase’s final lecture - @joerirogelj.bsky.social highlights that the global risks posed by climate change were predicted to be higher in 2022 compared to 2016 (due to new research) 🧪

Deadline coming up for cool biodiversity-AI PhD with the wonderful @robinfreeman.bsky.social at @zslscience.bsky.social and @wwf.org.uk and me at the glorious UCL East campus in People & Nature Lab

☀️ We already know 2024 was the warmest year on record 🤒 Today at @granthamicl.bsky.social’s Climate Research Showcase, @frediotto.bsky.social is highlighting that many of the extreme temperatures we’re now experiencing would never have happened without human-induced climate change 🔥

In 2024, global heat stress reached new highs, affecting 44% of the planet on its peak day. Discover the details for various regions in our Global Climate Highlights 2024 report: bit.ly/40kQpcz

Pandemics, global change, and biodiversity loss? In a new paper published in the first issue of @natrevbiodiv.bsky.social, we argue that these are three facets of an ongoing polycrisis, with common roots, and hopefully common solution. A short thread. 🧪😷 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

NEW 🦠‼️ Several countries and reports have called for the creation of an Intergovernmental Panel on Pandemics. Over the last two years, we brought global health law experts together with IPCC and IPBES members, and mapped out a blueprint for its scope and governance. 🔓 papers.ssrn.com/abstract=508...

A study of 2.9 million rivers worldwide reveals large shifts in global river flow patterns over the past 30 years. The results emphasize the critical yet changing role of upstream rivers in flood dynamics and the far-reaching consequences for both natural and human systems.

Ok people. I’m drawing silhouettes this afternoon. If you have a paper coming up and you are in need of a #silhouette please let me know and I will have it ready today. As always I upload all my silhouettes to phylopic.org I also have tutorials on how to put a silhouette in a plot in R.

Agroecology offers a powerful pathway towards achieving biodiversity, climate, and food security goals simultaneously. foodtank.com/news/2024/11...

#climatechange, #nature loss and #foodinsecurity are all inextricably linked and dealing with them as separate issues won’t work” —concludes @ipbes.bsky.social major nexus report

Nexus report by #IPBES is out and making the news “governments are underestimating or ignoring the links between five key areas - biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change.” This "siloed" approach has unintended consequences… bbc.com/news/article...

Important piece by Gittleman - “It’s impossible to separate human health from health of the natural world. Ecology is the unifying science that integrates knowledge..[the] One Health approach is unlimited, exciting, & necessary for the health of life on our planet” www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... 🧪🌎🌐🌾

Dinosaurs 🦕 for a treat after lunch at #BES2024! Bouwe Reijenga explains that after the 🦕 died, beta diversity (differences in species between places) increased rapidly, local richness only increased much more slowly. He suggests speciation occurred in isolated fragments of habitable space.

Tomorrow I’ll be talking at #BES2024 - if you’re interested in ecosystem service resilience following ecological community shifts, come and have a listen or a chat! (1.15 in room 3B)

Great start of the #BES2024! Come see my poster (A17.0) on #AI, #epidemiology, and #LLM s this evening:)

#BES2024 Policy Debate - we need to take into account the nature, climate, and housing crises together. We need to come up with an integrated plan, and not pit one against another. Very interesting start to the conference!
