“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

your identity in a capitalist society

Yet another example of "savvy commentator" disease - it's blatantly obvious to everyone that "Gulf of America" is bullshit, so we cannot put that in print. Instead we have to show off how smart we are to have Considered All Angles by publishing the most tortured "well actually" angle we thought of.

they're propagandists first and law professors second so they probably do not care. the people who should actually be embarrassed are the supposedly liberal professors who were going to bat for their intellectual honesty and integrity. operating on a level of a dog that understands tone, not words

Here is my third weekly dispatch, imagining how the US media *should* be covering the Musk coup if it was clear-eyed about the threat to our democracy. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-trump...

I am really outdone. The Maryland National Guard cannot celebrate Frederick Douglass, the state’s native son and perhaps the greatest American this nation ever produced, because he’s Black and his chosen birthday happened to fall during Black History Month. (Ask me why he had to choose is b-day)

like, this is just fucking insane. the government is pretending that it passed the Inverse Civil Rights Act overnight and everyone is acting like it's a real law.

CBS is one of a dozen U.S. outlets that responded to authoritarianism by shifting coverage further right, which is why we're calling rounding up minorities in the middle of the night and dumping them in random countries they've never been to a "breakthrough"

This is the thing about the American "postliberal" right: their entire frame of reference is the domestic culture war. Everything, even geopolitics, comes down to it in the end.

You guys need to wise up, you’re not dealing with conservatives or libertarians trying to implement conservative or libertarian policies. You are dealing with fascists trying to destroy the idea of the truth and replace it with the exercise of power.

Great quotes here from a Canadian official — viewing the provincial premiers as rubes who went to DC, learned it’s not actually that easy dealing with Trump, paid $85,000 for a meeting with senior-mid-level staff, got publicly ridiculed after by that Trump staff ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/214...

It's striking the extent to which there's never any justification given for any of this beyond "it's too many people" or "it's actually fake" and no apparent planning behind any of it. It's the aesthetics of "move fast and break things" without any discernible direction or purpose. It's cosplay.

So much of that money goes to people, groups, & companies that are, at best, amoral actors who don't care about the Democratic program, and in many cases actively working against the good of the party & its voters Hundreds of millions of dollars in ad-buy right into the pockets of Trump's boosters.

they're crashing planes by the boatload now

if there are any newspaper editors reading this, think of it like, the Saturday Night Massacre was considered the "Harvard administrator cited sources improperly in their college thesis" of the 1970s in terms of how big a scandal it was.

let's see what DOGE has been cancelling at the department of education. @stuartbuck.bsky.social went through the list. will link to his post at the end of the thread. i will start with his 4th example: foundational research to understand how american kids are doing at school

every day I think about the comms strategy of the korean opposition party in the wake of the coup and I get so burningly resentful that other countries have legislators who are awake

This story shows how far twitter and bluesky have diverged. The whole article is about duolingo pushing a brand narrative on twitter and other brands reacting to it. The fact nobody here is talking about it makes it look like a PR puff piece (which it is) but also weirdly like an alien relic.

This excellent post identifies some huge flaws in a "study" by the MRC which doesn't interrogate why right-wing sources like OANN and Newsmax are deprecated (not banned) as sources on Wikipedia, and ignored right-leaning sources that are considered reliable and are widely used.

What is happening in the US.. Verdict: Self coup, in-progress, success still unknown.

Tweet from White House Deputy Chief of Staff makes it seem like the meeting was about as stupid as you'd expect

This is quite literally what the WHCA exists to prevent. The general idea behind its creation was that if one outlet got mistreated, the rest could band together to counterpressure . The fact that they won't/haven't is sad.

Today it's over "the Gulf of America." What state-mandated language or positions will the White House require reporters to parrot to retain access to events in the future?

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: an administration (and its supporters) who believe that they are not limited by the rule of law have no moral or philosophical claim to the protection of the rule of law. “The law is whatever we say it is” warrants the same in response.

i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!

in what meaningful way can we say that the constitution is in effect when an unelected and unaccountable billionaire is wielding state power to unilaterally cancel congressional appropriations?

This would be calamitous. If you'd like to help, there's a page here: dredf.org/protect-504/

Excuse me while I vent for a moment SHE IS THE APPROPRIATIONS CHAIR. SHE CAN SUBPOENA OFFICIALS, HOLD TELEVISED HEARINGS, HOLD UP ANYONE’S FUNDING, ZERO OUT THE WHITE HOUSE’S FUCKING ICE CREAM AND DIET COKE BUDGET, AND ENFORCE THE APPROPRIATIONS LAWS THAT ARE THE SOURCE OF HER PERSONAL POWER.

It's very serendipitous that my accumulation of personal wealth and power is also what's best for my country and fellow citizens

This was an interesting read. My takeaways were that 1. a bunch of “libertarians” apparently want to become petty despots because they find democracy too frustrating, and that 2. these people fail to recognize that democracy is one of the things keeping a lot of people from wanting to kill them.

I bet doom scroll meant something way cooler in the middle ages.

This is precisely what Trump wanted: the appeals court for labor law is inert, but companies still have the option to appeal. Therefore, companies can just appeal to block election results and have them held up indefinitely. www.cnbc.com/2025/02/06/w...

Trump already empowering the worst bosses to just.. ignore labor law. Whole Foods workers won their union vote, and now Whole Foods (owned by Jeff Bezos) is saying they simply won't recognize the vote because nobody is going to make them.

Republican legal scholarship is now just a game. A game where you see who can contort plain English into the least absurd pretzel that conforms to the lawless demands of a diseased party.

ah trump’s merit in action. only certain people can be meritorious

having border patrol raid school busses to terrorize children is far more harmful to your kids than a trans teenager in palo alto playing water polo

Yeah so the Constitution isn’t really in effect right now

like the dictators they worship, the american right cannot distinguish between the aesthetic and appearance of power and actual power

I’ve been thinking about this, and one of our predicaments is that the big union action here is a lawsuit and not a mass sit-in.
