Thank you! The historical parallels are from earlier in AMERICAN HISTORY. I've been calling this man Andrew Jackson Jr rather than Cheeto Hitler I think folks cling to the Hitler comparisons because that was the one time the big racist dictator was defeated. Andrew Jackson is on the $20 bill.

💯 Everyone saying, "oh, these orders will be overturned" is ignoring the fact that Trump has absolutely no respect for the law. There is simply no system in place in the country to force the executive branch to comply with judicial rulings. And Congressional Republicans aren't going to do anything.

Simplified explanation of direct vs indirect costs: Draper and his team (not shown) are the creative power behind an ad agency. In academic research, Draper and his team’s work would be supported by direct costs. Everything else (people, objects, facilities) in the pic would be supported by IDCs. 🤨

Stalin attacked the arts. Hitler attacked the arts. Castro attacked the arts. There’s a map for where this is heading.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

The idea that any 'elite' community would be able stay under the radar in the face of Trump's assault on reason was absurd. So many intellectuals thought just yesterday "well, it's terrible but we'll be okay." But sledgehammers are not guided missiles. They destroy indiscriminately.

1. I keep saying this, but it’s important to try to slow things down. It’s something that the Democrats really don’t get. You can win a war by losing every battle slowly.

Some people who think they aren't going to be impacted are imo going to quickly find out how intertwined their lives are with the State and its governments.

This is hopefully the beginning of the end of this tiny corner of The Madness.

I haven’t lived through the collapse of a civilisation before I study history so I have read the guidebooks, but they don’t quite capture the experience of being there

Jesus Christ. Next he'll be claiming that black people have a higher pain threshold than white people; black peoples' skin is thicker than white people; black people don't get sunburns or skin cancer. This is the kind of crap that was supposed to die with phrenology.

"The cheap, reliable labor force has generated more than $250 million for the state since 2000 — money garnished from prisoners’ paychecks, the AP wrote in December. Parole numbers have also plummeted in recent years." Slavery by another name indeed.

This is an absolutely critical point. The guy is WEAK and cannot handle actual conflict. He wants to be a bulldozer but he is actually a sputtering gas-powered weed-whacker.

I saw a post saying that ICE is pausing its tip line, so I decided to call myself to verify. The recorded voicemail said they are not currently accepting immigration status tips. Good job, friends.

The freeze of federal funding IS CANCELLED. Why? BECAUSE PEOPLE PUSHED BACK. Organizations that rely on funding. Average Americans. Apparently, some GOP behind the scenes. There was a firehose of phone calls. PUSH. BACK. AND ANNOUNCE THIS ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE. thehill.com/homenews/511...

Backlash builds: why the architecture world hates The Brutalist

Got me tearing up first thing in the morning.

It's too soon to know if screaming bloody murder will move the needle in our new reality, but this is encouraging.

NSF-funded postdoc labmates of mine have been told (by their POs!) to pull the rest of their funds for this year right now‼️ POs said they don't really have clear instructions but this info should be shared widely 🧪

This by Dan Savage is I think important to keep top of mind. It speaks to the point I made earlier that bad news is never the only news.

Academic workers across the country are organizing to call on our congressional representatives on Thursday, 1/30, at 3pm ET / 12pm PT to demand these restrictions be lifted immediately. There will be a training over zoom at the beginning of the event. Join us! form.jotform.com/250226137228...

To see it all laid out in this way is absolutely bone-chilling. How the hell are we going to get through this? We are only seven days in.

Per an NIH source: “Discussions with colleagues have suggested that if the universities all come together and raise hell about the delays to funding caused by not holding meetings, that might move the needle. From every state. There are well-funded universities in red states that will be impacted.”

What is clear is that these Jonads have been biting their lips wanting to use this word (and, lets be honest, a bunch of other similarly 'taboo' words), for YEARS. They are absolutely thrilled that they can finally let loose - and it is only DAY SEVEN.

BREAKING: Philadelphia workers have won the first Whole Foods union under Amazon with UFCW. Since Amazon bought the chain, workers have lost benefits and felt the squeeze. Now they're fighting back against the multi-trillion dollar giant and hoping this win will be the first of many.

TikTok took it down, so let’s share the shit out of this reading list. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #NeverAgainIsNow #BookSky #StateMediaCensorship

This is so goddamn funny

Someone should send this to Richard Dawkins.

Max capacity passengers per hour: * Boring Co’s Vegas Loop: 4,500 * NYC subway 6 train: 105,000

The richest men in the world wasting no time in suggesting they need a govt bailout to be able to compete with Communist Chinese technology?

With zero expertise but lots of spite I'm 100% confident in predicting that either AI, crypto, or some combination of the two is going to tank the economy in a real and disastrous fashion, and who voters blame for it will depend largely on who is most closely allied with AI and crypto

At the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in San Antonio, farmers said they don't know what to expect from Trump's mass deportation plan and some wonder how they will farm without migrant labor. via @texaspublicradio.bsky.social

Perhaps I missed it, but where is the American Medical Association on the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr for HHS secretary? Once again the AMA is MIA.

Let's recap the timeline for those of you who haven't been following. Friday: a deportation flight containing 88 Brazilians takes off from American soil. The deportees are handcuffed and bound in leg irons, as is standard practice on such flights. The Americans are flying into a trap.
